Source for inexpenisve knits for making muslins

I have determined am NOT cutting into my remaining two lengths of good knits until I get a muslin that works. I'd rather give that fabric away than end up with another wadder made of a material I am invested in. So, where do you get your cheap knits for muslins?

I say inexpensive b/c they are always nicer than the price charges! I usually buy them when they are running a sale to get them even "cheaper". NAYY, HTH

You could probably find some at a thrift store or yard sales for pretty cheap. If you're visiting thrift stores don't forget to look in the craft section. I found a practically full bolt of a basic Jersey knit for $5 a while back. It's a baby yellow color not the best color for me but works great for muslins

Date: 1/11/13 3:09 AM Just a warning - try to do your muslin in a knit that is very similar in weight and stretch to your fashion fabric. Even so, you still may need to tweak the final fit a bit as all knits are different. Another possibility is to buy a large man's tee from a thrift shop, if you can't find the weight you want in yardage. On the other hand, knits are also pretty forgiving regarding fit! I recommend cutting out in a single layer with a cutting mat and rotary cutter, if possible.

I have used XL tees from the thrift shop for muslin material. But as you point out, they don't have the same stretch as many knits. I keep reading that knits are so forgiving regarding fit. Alas, that has not been my experience.

I'm eyeing a few between 20-25 a yard that I'd call expensive though...I love to order from Emma one sock but I need cheaper yardage for wearable muslins, as I'm still new to apparel and can't afford $60 wadders... I tend to troll the sale sections and big sales at some of the nicer online stores. I've gotten good deals on French and Italian viscose knits at Elliott Berman (10-12$ a yard). I also just ordered a big pile of knits from marcy tilton, at 6-8$ a yard for rayon knits, some of them European. Having had some bad luck ordering super cheap knits from fabric.com, which is certainly an option, I'm excited to get fine quality knits on close out for just a bit more. ------ Yards sewn 2012: 34 Yards sewn 2013: 13.5 (goal 70!)

Date: 1/11/13 4:31 PM Spandex House and Spandex World have great sales and always something in the super clearance bins. $1.99 - $3 per yard is great for test versions. I have also scored at the thrift shops. The dress in my avatar is the second one made from a bolt I got for maybe $30. I also used it on muslins galore and eventually passed a huge chunk of it on at a local fabric swap. ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown.
