Would you like audio pattern directions? Pattern directions that speak to you

Date: 1/11/13 10:08 AM I was looking around my iphone to see if there were any good sewing apps. Sadly, there is not much out there. So, as I was thinking about apps, I thought that it would be awesome if the big 4 would have audio instructions for each pattern. For example, I could pull up Vogue 3333 and I could either play the directions all the way through or I could play the step I was working on. I think it would be a great time saver. I can see myself pressing or hand sewing while listening to what I would be doing next. Let me know what you think. ~Claire

Date: 1/11/13 11:14 AM While I love sewing videos and video classes-like Craftsy classes, I know that audio directions alone wouldn't work for me. Not with sewing. I would say I'm an auditory learner with other things, but not something as hands-on as sewing. It may work for some, but just not for me. ------ Liz

I really like the printed word for instructions and classes. I want to refer and make notes if I want/need to. Go back, etc. Change the order, other things.

For me, the diagrams are the most important part, not the words. In addition, when the directions are complicated, the words are easier for me to "get" when I can go at my own pace. Video instructions that I can easily rewind is good, but just verbal instructions, not for me.

Date: 1/11/13 3:40 PM No. If a pattern has both pictures and text, I will usually ignore the text and just follow the pictures. Lots of people probably do not read every word of the pattern instructions anyway, but most do at least pull out and unfold and glance at the directions, and read them once, and I do believe most of what they are looking at there is the diagrams and pictures, and so having an audio track, that was just the same as what was printed there, might not be all that helpful. Also, when constructing something, and continually going back to check the instructions, I think most people are going back to compare real item to picture and diagram in the directions too. However, if the written directions were not in a language the user reads, and they needed more than just the picture diagrams to get by, then I could really see how having an audio track to go along with it, (as in a language translation) in the language you happen to speak and read, could be really handy then sometimes.

For many patterns I think this would suit me just fine, especially if I could voice activate it. The instruction sheet tends to get buried when I'm sewing, being able to shout at something to tell me what to do next might be fun, especially for the neighbors.
