Date: 1/12/13 11:47 PM Hi Pattern Review,
I am going to start on my very first sewing project for a man. Well my husband. I signed up for the Classic Tailored shirt on Craftsy.com with Pam Howard and did a tailored shirt for myself. I had a pretty good degree of success.
I have the Shirtmaking Techniques DVD and book by David Coffin as a great resource.
Now I would like to give sewing for my husband a try for 2013.
My plans are:
1) Casual Shirt long sleeve
2) Casual shirt short sleeve
3) Golf style shirt
4) Classic white dress shirt
5) Flat front casual pant - golf
6) Jeans
7) Casual suit jacket
8) Classic Suit Jacket
Do any of you have pattern you would recommend for me to use?
Suggestions of online class, DVD or books to add to my library?
My first project will be a shirt pattern from Kwik Sew 3422.
This pattern has been reviewed by members and I must say the results are really wonderful.

How many of you have sewn for men?
Do you do up a muslin for woven shirts?
Do you have plans for a mens wardrobe in 2013?

Date: 1/13/13 0:39 AM I'm currently working on a T-shirt for DH. It's a carbon copy of the store brand they sell at Academy Sports. I laid one of the T's he has on top of the pattern pieces and it fit exactly. That way I knew I was making the right size for him because he likes loose-fitting T's for working out. I'm using KS 3299. I've already used the pattern to make a pocket T-shirt for my FIL:

I'm working with some 4-way stretch Kaufman Laguna Jersey Knit from Fabric.com (NAYY) and still haven't perfected the length proportion for the neckband. The pattern piece has a one-to-one ratio for the neckband. Decreasing the length by three inches due to the 50% stretch of the fabric was still not sufficient to get the neckband to lie flat. I laid the neckline for DH's T on the ironing board and pinched out two darts that would equal at least another inch that I need to shorten the neckband by. I'll be trying this out on the next T I make him because this one is at the cover stitch hem stage.
I've also made a pair of drawstring shorts for him from KS 3421. I also made the T-shirt he is wearing with the shorts. He wanted a T-shirt that was looser than that one so that is why I am making him some with the Kwik Sew pattern above.
Last year, I also made him a Hawaiian shirt from OOP M 4518. Here is my review. It fit him great so I need to make a few more for him.
The next item on my list for DH is KS 3288. I'm using the same jersey I used for his T-shirt and have several colors of the same fabric. I can't wait to see how he likes them.
So far I've made DH everything out of the fabric I intended it to be made out of so no muslins. The only exception was the first T-shirt. That was made with some cheap Walmart fabric that ended up pilling. DH wanted something a little bigger anyway so it wasn't a great loss. -- Edited on 1/13/13 1:12 AM -- ------ Judy |

Date: 1/13/13 5:55 AM Hi Scheri, Well you know that sewing shirts for men is one of my 2 sewing-related professions! I sew many dozens of shirts for my clients and several for my husband every year :)
While I design and hand-draft the patterns for the shirts I make for my clients, I do have 2 casual shirt patterns that I've used for my DH Roger with great success--
1. Vogue 8800
2. Negroni Shirt (Colette Patterns)
You might be interested to see the special front-facing technique I use for casual shirts (both men's and women's styles), that gives a much more professional "high end" look. --Click Here for the Tutorial--

Date: 1/13/13 2:00 PM Pam, thank you so much for your recommendation of Vogue 8800! I don't think I would otherwise have paid attention to it, but your highlighting of its design features makes it one I am definitely going to try. |

Date: 1/15/13 10:36 AM Pam what can I say after many visits to your Off The Cuff website I now am excited. I went shopping found great fabrics and cut out Kwik Sew 3422. I read through David Coffins books and watched his DVD. Today I am going to spend the day working on samples using my rolled hem foot and felling foot. Thank you for your inspiration :-)

Date: 1/15/13 10:54 AM I have a couple of suggestions....
Casual shirt... McCall's 2149 it can also be dressier with french collar & long sleeves with cuff. So far DH prefers view E & view B
Jacket ... Kwik Sew 3123 It can be cooler or warm jacket. My friend & I each made it for our DH & her DH prefered heavy weight cotton while mine wanted a warmer suit fabric with heavy flannel for the lining. Quite a bit of top stitching with this pattern but it looks so nice when completed.
Vest ...Simplicity 2346 I am not sure how this looks when completed a it is in progress but DH likes it so far.
And if your DH likes boxers there are a few nice patterns for those.
You might want to check Men sew thread here there have been some really nice posts on this topic.
Best wishes! ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic!
