So I liked my Imagine, but I REALLY wanted a coverstitch...my dealer let me trade up to the Evolution. So it says it uses ELx705CF needles, with the "CF" standing for "chrome finish". So, I can find 100 Organ ELx705 needles at ctusa.com for $34. But they don't say "chrome finish". On the other hand, the best bulk price I can find on the Schmetz ELx705CF (that do have the chrome finish) is $126 for a box of 100. Quite a price difference! I can't find any Organ needles that say they are "CF". Advice, please -- is it worth it to pay almost 4x as much for the Schmetz CF? Or has anybody found them cheaper somewhere? Many thanks

Do you have the manual? It should specify the needles in there.

Might even be on a label somewhere on the machine.

I have the BL Imagine and a separate BL coverstitch -- LOVE them both.

I have the BL Evolve and I've been using the ELx705 (non-CF) needles without any problems. Not sure if it is really worth the extra money to get the chrome finish.

Here's a source for those needles.

Allbrands has them $80 for a box of 100, with free shipping.

I used to just use Schmetz needles before in my Babylock Evolve, but ever since I switched to the CF needles I notice far fewer skipped stitches, especially when doing a coverstitch.

ELx 705 is fine, you don't have to use the CF needles.

Thanks $80 is a lot better than $126 for a hundred. I swallowed hard and ordered from there. It sounds like I would probably be fine most of the time without the "CF" but I think I will use it a lot for coverstitch so I'd rather spend a little more for the needles than run the risk that I'll swear and curse and ruin projects...

I think it was a good decision. The chrome finish is supposed reduce heat during use, help the needle punch through the fabric better, and make them longer lasting. When I bought my Evolve the dealer said that regular needles were fine, so that's why I used them for so long. My manual, however, said to always use the CF needles. With regular needles I would have a lot of trouble with skipped stitches coverstitching unless I used wooly nylon as the bottom thread. I finally read about the CF needles on PR and decided to try them, and now my machine is not so fussy anymore. I guess my dad was right! He was a mechanic and said that no matter what they tell you at the dealership, always read the owner's manual before using something (be it a car or sewing machine) because sometimes the sales people are incorrect.
