I just discovered that the Amazing Designs "Size It" program also adds a basting stich around your design field if your machine doesn't have that feature.

I have a Brother 700II, and one fuction I have wished it had was the basting stitch.

Size It is now only $99, and will resize and change stitch count designs to +150% or as much as -50%.

I have and use AD Personalized n Stitch and Catalog It and use an Amazing Box Max, so everything works seamlessly. I especially like the Personalize n Stitch and have used it many times to create mongrams (it includes dozens of fonts and frames) and merge designs and add lettering.

I think I will add Size It, as there have been times I really wished I had the basting feature. I believe, as with their other programs, they have a free trial available.

Many editing software programs include basting.

Look at the built-in options of your EM. It should have frames. If you choose the one with the running stitch and then resize as needed, you will have the basting stitch without buying software.

Thanks! I have never used the built-in frames. I found a rectangular one, rotated it, and was able to enlarge it to 4.75" x 6.75", then selected a running stitch. (the stitches lengthened as I enlarged it). Then I saved it in memory. I'll be good to go!

Can you tell me what the basting stitch is in regards to embroidery and why it's used? I'm still learning.

The term "basting" in sewing refers to holding fabric in place with an elongated stitch so it can be easily removed after item is sewn.

In the case of machine embroidery, this step helps insure the item being embroidered & the stabilizer do not shift during the embroidery process.

I, too, am fairly new to embroidery. Regarding basting, can I not do my own basting around my design field before I hoop it? What is the advantage of a basting stitch after hooping. Thank you for your reply.

Being able to just add a basting stitch after hooping is a rather sweet thing.

The other day, I had to place the project piece at about a 45 degree angle so the embroidery design would still fit a 4x4 hoop. (If I tried to tilt the embroidery design, it would have meant I would have had to use at least a 5x7 hoop if not an 8x8. That would have wasted more stabilizer)

So it was nice getting the whole works laid out in the hoop - with stabilizer only hooped ... and then moving the fabric to fit the design just right.... THEN letting the machine whip around the design with a basting stitch.

My EllieG will easily add a basting stitch to a design.

If you are going to hoop everything together, I guess it wouldn't matter. But the nice thing about doing it with the embroidery design is that you can do it very close to the design - like 1mm away! There are times that's kinda nice to be able to do.

Several embroidery sites have free basting stitches in their freebies. Here is one in several formats, here is another one.

When you visit embroidery sites, you can look for other free basting stitches,if you don't like the ones above.

Basting before hooping may not be as "snug" as after & with the EM. However, if you can get satisfactory results hand or pin basting, go for it.
