Date: 1/15/13 2:45 PM This may be a silly question, but it's causing me trouble. How do you-easily-put in a needle with a large shank? I've been playing with heirloom sewing, which means wing needle. The one needle is 120/19, a big needle. I'm trying to get this sucker in without flipping the machine upside down and it's making me nuts. My method is current loosening the screw so much the needle clamp slides off. Then I can see where the needle goes, put in in and slide the clamp back up and tighten it. I have a Singer Signature, about 6 months old. I love my machine, but playing with the wing needles is driving me nuts. Once it's in, no problem. Any tricks to making this easier?

Date: 1/15/13 5:54 PM Make sure your needle bar is in the complete up position. Turn the hand wheel towards you until it's all the way up.
Also, it may be a little easier if you take the presser foot off to insert the needle. |

1 member likes this. The needle is all the way in the up position and I already take the foot off for this needle. It's a big monster of a needle, and I need all the room I can get. If I need to lower the needle the clamp that's okay, I just wondered if there was an easier/better way to do it. Sometimes I'm just missing a bit of knowledge that would make my life a lot easier with sewing. Like when I didn't know that cranking the handwheel towards me would bring up the feed dogs. I don't have some nearby to ask the simple sewing questions like that. So I tend to use Pattern Review as the mentor I don't have. I use the internet a lot, but nothing like asking experienced sewers those pesky questions that are big missing gaps in my experience.

Date: 1/15/13 6:43 PM In this case the needle is too big for the needle clamp of your machine.. Singer makes a wing needle for their machines try 1 of theirs. The other option is go 1 size down in a wing needle. The needle clamp has a little clip/spring inside to help hold the needle....when you loosen so much that the whole thing comes off those teeny tiny parts will fall out. A new needle clamp isn't fun to install. ------

Date: 1/15/13 7:14 PM Okay, playing around with the wing needles-I have 2 different sizes of Schmetz needles. The 100/16 will usually go in without the clamp needing to come off. the 130/19 will occasionally go in without the clamp coming off. The biggest problem is I can't see what I'm doing, when the clamp piece slides down I can easily see where the needle goes. The machine sews fine with either needle, I use almost exclusively Schmetz needles and they work very well for my machine. When I look at my manual they list uses for needles up to an 18, I don't know if there is a max size for my machine as it doesn't say that. I suspect a call to Singer is in order tomorrow, and I need to call them about the bobbin case anyway. I know they'll tell me to use only Singer needles, they have before:) I didn't realize I could lose parts, I will really have to watch that. I think I need a wing needle sized inbetween the 2 sizes I have, they were the only 2 sizes my local sew and vac had. Joann's certainly doesn't carry them. I may have to order needles, I don't know where else locally would carry them.

While the wing part is large and the shank is thicker, the actual part of the needle that goes into the "hole" is standard with Schmetz, at least in all the needles I've used. The length of their needles would be the same as well. What differes is the point and diameter. Is this just an awkward thing or does the needle not fit the hole? I think if I were you I would go with the singer needles. Wouldn't hurt.

As for Joann's my local store doesn't have them, or at least I couldn't find them. But I'll double check again, it won't hurt. I would have to order Singer needles, at least the wing needles. And a quick comparison of the wing needle and a regular sharp reveals they are not the same size. The shank that goes into the clamps is thicker on the wing needle, had my hubby double check it. And I use almost all Schmetz needles and my machine has no problem with them. As a matter of fact I don't think I have any Singer needles. Since I haven't had any problems sewing, I don't think it's the fit, just the pain in the butt inserting them.
