Hi everyone,

A work colleague has asked me to make her a dress for a wedding in April.

This is the inspiration dress.

If you're not thrown by the beading, tulle and the shoulder drapey thingy, it's actually a fairly simple design.

Princess seamed top and princess seamed skirt with a fishtail flaring out from the knee.

Any recommendations for patterns? (I do have access to quite a few Burda mag archives too)
She is plus-sized.

(Alternatively, how do I add the fishtail element to an existing princess seam skirt? Is it just a circle added?)

TIA!

Awesome, thanks! My brief look at Vogue's dress patterns was clearly too brief :-)

So I'm curious and have to ask, what types/colors of fabric are you planning? Or is the inspiration dress just for shape?

I just finished a mermaid/fishtail gown using Vogue 2237. It has princess seamed darts to the hip, but I extended them all the way to the bottom, and then flared the dress out at knee level for the mermaid shape (I also changed the neckline to sweetheart.) While this pattern doesn't run any bigger than sz 18, you could use any princess seamed dress and modify the bottom.

BTW, I chose this over Vogue 2931 because of the foundation inside: V2237's went to the waist and would actually support a strapless dress, while the one in V2931 was only in the bust/empire area for shaping.

My review.

Vogue 2931 is something I contemplated-then I saw a photo of a sample. The fishtail skirt hung stiffly More like an octopus than a Mermaid. Not pretty!

Well from the picture you provided it looks more of a peplum in front then transitioning to a fishtail as opposed to just a ordinary fishtail. I'd probably opt to draft a skirt bottom than trying to find a pattern that may or may not have everything you are looking for. Pageant dresses often have that kind of skirt.

@prostheticsgirl - this dress is for a traditional African Wedding - my colleague really likes the yellow/blue fabric combination and the beading round the midriff (although someone else will be doing the beading)
She wants to leave off the shawl/drapey bit.
And instead of tulle/netting that peaks out the bottom, she wants to use shweshwe - which is an indigo dyed cloth (generally cotton) that lots of the Xhosa ladies here wear as traditional dress.

This pic shows the shweshwe fabrics as they're typically worn.

It's very cool fabric, and has quite an interesting history.

The company that makes shweshwe is Da Gama Textiles (NAYY)
Here are some of their typical prints
