I haven't owned a comfortable mattress for almost 10 years. I just can't seem to get comfortable since I injured my back. Memory foam, organic wool, springs, air mattress, foam, simple cotton futon, eurosprings.... I've tried a LOT of things.

I tried out a wool topper at a mattress store and I liked it, but the price tag seemed inflated, and the reviews for their products were not great. I've since found a place that is a five hour drive away that sells a product similar to what I want, but I wonder if it isn't worth it to just build the topper myself.

Has anyone built one of these at home? How did it go? How did it perform? Would you do it again?

I sort of made one a long time ago. There is a review of it here, but the photos are probably all broken. I might be able to hunt them down later.

There are actually a lot of sources that sell the bed-size wool batts, you can try places like wool processing mills that would have the best prices. I think Folkwear also has a pattern for a futon, I don't have a copy, but it might have some info on making mattress-like items.

That is serious kinds of helpful, thanks.

If you don't mind me asking. How did you end up with an air mattress in a waterbed frame? I decided to sleep on my Coleman air mattress last night and I feel SO much better this morning that I did yesterday. I have seriously considered using it as a daily sleeper.

They sell specially sized air mattresses that fit in waterbed frames. I've had a few - they last about 4-5 years before something happens and they need to be replaced.

I've had the waterbed frame for 20+ years, but most rentals don't allow waterbeds, so it was just cheapest to get an air mattress that fit the frame. The air mattresses are a lot cheaper than airbeds, but you need to have the hardside waterbed frame, and they only come in non-standard sizes.
