Just before Christmas, my 18221 was breaking needles. There are scratches on the plate. The week after Christmas, I took her to be checked out at All Brands. They have always been good to my machines. Luckily, I have a 16221 to use in her absence. I had not heard back from the service tech and was getting worried. So I called them this morning. Tech won't be in until Monday, but they pulled up her info.

Seems she needs a new bobbin case and face plate. Here is the concern, the person on the phone said "WOW! This is gonna be expensive", but didn't quote the price. He said he is going to talk with the tech on Monday and see if he can get the parts from another source(ie. Janome, rather than Kenmore or vice versa).

Sorry about making a short story long, but how much is too much, when it comes to a Kenmore 18221, I bought on sale for about $150, 5 years ago?

It kind of sounds like they were trying to get you into the mindset to possibly buy a better machine. I can't imagine those parts being that expensive. You can always check with Sears parts and install them yourself. eBay may even have something. There may be another adjustment needed, though, as it sounds like the needle keeps coming down in the wrong spot.
You only paid $150 for it and the service/parts may end up costing the same as what you spent on it.

If it is a similar problem that Kenmore 24 stitch had ... I think I had posted about this ... feed dogs out of line & needed repair, alignment, also needle plate needed sanding underneath. .... That was 2 years ago & I am thinking it was around $49 .... I cannot remember. However our SMG has really raised his prices this past year allot! Tune up used to be $59 it is now $89.95! ..... So I am wondering if it is the hourly rate to fix your sm that is the pricey cost....???
I think I would draw the line at the $150.00 ..... that is if you really like the sm, which I am thinking from your other posts that you do. ....
I would see too what is a replacement just like it going to cost? We all know that Kenmore's are now being priced more whenever you find one.
Please post again how this goes.....

to add; Just checked Ebay I did not see your model right off hand, checked Overstock.com the pink one like yours new is selling $399.00 ....

If they need to replace the needle plate and the entire hook assembly, you're looking at about 80$ worth of parts.
pre-labor.

TGM, your guy is cheap!
I charge more than that, and I am low for Portland.

Perhaps I should qualify to say for my budget repairs here have gotten expensive. ........ when one is on a fixed income it makes it a bit more challenging..... sorry I should have been more clear....

well if you are used to 59, and he charges 89...he's almost doubled his prices.

Thank you all for your replies. It gives me something to go on. Yep, this machine has been continued by Janome, painted pink, and been given a $399 price tag.

In light of the hand surgery I had this past week, The dials on my 18221 and 16221 are becoming less attractive Since I still have the 16221, perhaps it's time to bite the bullet and find an electronic. Although I must say, I find the 18221 was smoother to work with than the 16221. Could just be a matter of a tune up.

I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow

Just heard back from the tech. He gave me the individual prices for the bobbin case($70.00) and the face plate($50.00). After installing the parts, there's the tune up. All total, I'm looking at about $200.00, for a machine I paid $150.00 for. I had a talk with the tech and told him of my eventual plans to get an electronic machine. He said, with the cost of repairing this one, I'm about half way to getting a new one. Makes sense.

Hubby has gone to pick her up. I still have the 16221. If I decide, down the road, to spend that kind of money and have 18221 repaired, I can.

Now, on with the continuing search for a new electronic machine. I've been getting lots of input on my other thread.

Wow those prices are high. Do you think your DH could put the parts in if you found them allot more reasonable cost? ....
I would ask Sew Classic she has found a few things for me ...... it would not hurt to ask anyways. ..... Poor 18221 ....

But if you think a new one is the way to go I might pursue both myself.... new options & getting parts to fix this sm kid ......
Keeping fingers crossed you get to sewing again soon....

Hi Kitty. When Hubby brought her into the house, he said he might be able to fix it, if we can find the parts. We are starting the search. Will let you know how it goes. I'm still not able to do any sewing because of hand surgery. PT guy was real pleased today. Said my range of motion is really good Stitches come out next Monday.
