I mostly hand stitch everything I make but making buttonholes slows me down. I'd like to have a sewing machine that makes good buttonholes on those items that aren't worth the investment time of hand made button holes. My old Janome sewing machine buttonholer no longer works. I have had it fixed twice now and can't seem to keep it working.
I am looking for a new machine (don't need bells/whistles/embroidery) that will do really good to great buttonholes across multiple types of fabric without choking on bulk. I am also looking to sew pants so I'm looking for something with a good basic stitch. I've read reviews of Janome 7330 or HD3000 or DC43030. The last was recommended on pattern review but it at the high end of what I want to spend. I was hoping to stay around $400-$500 if possible. Does anyone have any experience with these machines or other suggestions.

The DC4030 has six styles of buttonholes and you can adjust the width on them, too. The machine sells everywhere for $549.

The HD3000 is a mechanical machine with one one-step buttonhole.

Did you check out the DC3050, too? It sells for $449

Brothers make nice buttonholes. Consider the PC-210, currently selling for about $303 on Amazon. Brother has the nicest needle threader out there:

I should add that I had the Janome Harmony 8080(was sold at Sears) for awhile, which is the same as the DC3050. It really was a nice machine and so easy to use. I like machines where all the stitches and functions are viewable...no hunting through screens and pecking with a stylus. I ended up buying one for my Mom and she still uses it.

You know they make a perfect machine for everything- hemming, coverstitching, windjng bobbins, making bias tape, etc.
You would think someone would have invented a machine to make perfect buttonholes!

I think that SandiMacD was referring to a machine whose sole function was making buttonholes, like a cover stitch machine...I think the one made by Griest was actually an attachment for a regular sewing machine. BTW--how do I enter my post as "In reply to....?

Okay - pulled the trigger on the model up from the Brother PC-210 - the PC-420. The cost of the additional feet that you get with the higher model pretty much offset the additional cost. I wavered between the Janome but I never did like the buttonholes (even when the buttonholer) worked on my old Janome. The Brothers got good reviews on their buttonholes. Crossing my fingers.
