Help with sewing a gather back piece McCalls pattern 6313

I have never had much luck with putting elastic thread in my bobbin. It may depend on if you are able to adjust your bobbin tension manually, I believe, but am not sure, that you need a separate bobbin for that. Then do a longer straight stitch. The fabric should gather on its own. If you machine doesn't like the elastic thread in the bobbin case, you can just do a regular zig-zag stitch over the elastic thread and then pull it to gather.

I also find that the bobbin tension must be manipulated, and even though you may not have to add heat and steam, the difference, in my experience, is really nice. Consider that washing and drying will also do this, as the elastic is stretched when it is put on the original/commercial spool. Pam

I had avoided it for a while because I was sure it would be tricky. I do hand wind my bobbin with elastic thread with very slight tension, don't bother to change the bobbin tension (or upper tension for that matter) and don't bother with the steam and heat (but I also wash in cold and line dry my clothes, so maybe that makes a difference).
