non-seasonal sewing

Date: 1/22/13 2:18 PM I am not sure if this is the right forum to place this in, but I am have about decided to start sewing for Spring. I live in South Alabama and we have had a day or two here and there of cold, but for the most part we have been in the mid to upper 60's in the afternoons this winter. It was the same last winter--very unseasonably warm. I don't like it but that is beside the point. Up until last year we had for several years what I would call a winter for here in the south. Anyway, I am just finishing up a velveteen jacket and am thinking that may be it for my winter sewing. Do you think it is too early to start Spring sewing? I won't be able to wear it now, but at least I will have it when it gets here, which won't be long.

I need to at least start the conversation with my girls or I'll be sewing like crazy at the last minute. Even when I say I'm not making dresses this year....I suddenly decide to motivate at the last minute. 15yoDD wants Simp1699 with a little lower neckline. She is fairly easy to please, but I may need a muslin. 9yoDD - is such a sweet child. But she's very opinionated when it comes to clothing. I'll need to start looking for a suitable fabric soon, so wants turquoise always and pink never. Last year I finally found a blue print that didn't include ANY pink - and she was very happy! And she'll want to frankenpattern this sleeve with that neckline and no gathers. Yep, I better get started so she has time to pick out what she wants and I have time to make it work.

But I haven't learned yet so why fret about it now? Except when it is for my dc that have a tendency to grow.

Date: 1/23/13 10:20 AM It might be too early for YOU, when you whip out a couple garments a week! LOL But for the rest of us mortals, we need to start sooner. I generally start my fall sewing (Sept/Oct are fair season here) around February. Happily, sewing isn't like gardening--you don't need to worry that a late frost will kill your new dresses and tops! :D ------ ~Gem in the prairie
