Hello All,
Welcome to the RTW Designer Knockoff Contest!
I am excited to be managing this year.

Have you been inspired by some of the current - or not so current style trends? Is your Pinterest board, or your real live inspiration board- filled with pictures of garments you would love to own but either can't afford or can't find? Then the RTW (Ready To Wear)Contest is the contest for you!

Create a garment inspired by one that you have seen. The inspiration item can be from a Ready-To-Wear line, from the runway, or any other garment you have seen worn or pictured.

The garment must clearly be inspired by the original piece. It does not have to be, but can be, an exact copy. List changes you have made and what features you have kept.

Review requirements: A picture of the inspiration piece and your finished garment must both be included; they can be put into the same picture. It is highly recommended that you MODEL YOUR FINISHED garment and STRIKE THE SAME POSE AS THE MODEL IN THE INSPIRATION GARMENT PHOTO. If of course that is possible!

General Rules for all Contests

All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. It is suggested to start your review as a Work In Progress (private or public) so that you can get any bugs ironed out prior to the deadline.
2. Patterns MAY be muslined prior to the start of this contest however; fabric for contest garment may NOT be cut prior to the start of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the start of the contest.
3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome.
4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry, preferably on a live model.
5. Interpretation of rules is subject to the discretion of the contest manager and the contest committee.

Contest Eligibility: ***Rule #1 is changed for 2013
1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who is a registered member on the site before the contest begins is eligible to enter.
2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.
3. Any member who's won first place in a contest on Pattern Review that ended in the previous four-month period is ineligible to win another contest (during that four-month period).

The first, second and third place winners will be decided by member vote. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners.

Prizes for the contest

First Prize: $200 Gift Certificate from Mood Fabrics NY! (www.moodfabrics.com)
Second Prize: $100 Gift Certificate from Mood Fabrics NY (www.moodfabrics.com)

Voting guidelines:

Each member can vote on up to five entries.

Voting will begin2 days after contest closes and will close 7 days after voting starts.

Because of the high quality of the garments we're seeing entered in PR Contests, we're setting forth some guidelines that may help you choose when voting. Consider how well the entry fulfills each of the following criteria in order to narrow down your votes:
1. How well does the item fit the criteria stated in the contest rules? How well does it fit the spirit of the rules?
2. Are the construction methods, including but not limited to seam finishes, lining techniques, etc, well suited to the design? To the fabric?
3. Is the fabric choice well suited to the design? Are the lining and interfacing choices appropriate?
4. Is the review complete and well written?
5. Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well is the item constructed?
6. Creative points. You may choose to give extra credit here for an entry that reflects additional creativity (embellishment, fabric choice, etc.).
7. Complexity of the project. Relate this to the skill level of the participant. If a participant is a beginner then a princess seam may get the same complexity level as an underarm gusset gets for an advanced sewer. This is purely subjective, but a complex item might garner more points than a simple one if a tie-breaker is needed.

This post will be the collection point for rule and question clarifications. If there are any questions regarding rules, clarification or any other issues that arise, they will be added here. That saves members having to scroll through numerous pages of discussion for answers.

Are we allowed to enter more than one item?
Answer:
Yes you can!

Quote:
Do we have to post a picture of the item we're making?

Answer:
Yes and No - Yes, you do have to post one in the actual review, so we can see the inspiration piece, but no you do not have to post anything here in the contest thread.

Quote:
My inspiration is an adult dress, however, I would like to make it youth size.

Answer
Yes, you can do that as long as there is a clear inspiration piece, and photos of both the inspiration garment and the final garment in the review.

Quote:

Can I submit a couple of things as one entry? They are all from the same clothing line and I see them as a set rather than individual items.

Answer
All the rules are in the singular, but I think as a set would be fine if you mean a skirt/pant suit etc...

Create the individual reviews for each piece and enter just one of them to the contest, linking the other item within the body of the review that is entered in the contest. Be sure to include a photo showing your inspiration piece and finished ensemble.

This is always my favorite contest of the year! I've got some deciding to do...

2007: purchased 115+, sewed 105+
So close to parity, yet so far

Trying again in 2008
Yards purchased: 133
Yards sewn: Somewhere around 95

2009? I give up

I keep saying I'll enter contests and find I've bitten off more than I can chew, but I think I'm going to give this one a whirl. (It'll give me an excuse to spend hours making goo-goo eyes at pictures of thousand-dollar outfits I'll never afford :-D. It's, uh ... inspiration.)

I updated the inspiration link in the third post, and will continue to add links there as they come.
Thx :-)

OOPS so sorry ...did not see this thread
This is one of my favourite contests as trying to copy RTW-designer clothing is one of the reasons I sew.
I am making a very simple peplum dress, will get a lot of wear out of it.
I am looking for emerald green ponte. I have sent emails out to finefabricsstores.com that on my behalf send out my request to dozens of specialty fabric stores. No luck so far
I am wondering if emerald will be available to the public AFTER it is no longer in fashion LOL
I will try to scan photo of the dress later

.....Behold, a wonder did appear;
Amazement was my bliss.......

Yay! This is my favorite contest of the year, since I base lots of my stuff on ready-made wear. Good thing I just got back my sewing machine from service.
I'll be pouring over all my inspiration images this weekend! :)
