Silk Organza~ what the heck is it

I have been looking at some of the online class stuff and one of the things that I see in some lists is that I would need silk organza. Jeepers, now what the heck is that? I did a quick search in this section and didn't find a good explanation. Is that something I can strain my food with too?? Last I checked Dharma trading also had the best prices on silk organza. Not sure what your class uses it for but I've used it as a press cloth, underling, welt pockets... so many uses.

Date: 1/24/13 9:12 AM I also was wondering what silk organza was, as I kept reading about it on many sewing blogs, and here on PR. Until recently, when I placed an order (coincidentally, from the source in Scheri's link, above). I used it to underline a skirt made in boucle (not the best fabric for a skirt, I know), and I like how it helped with the shape of skirt. Does anyone know if this stuff is 100% silk, or is it a blend? I gave it a burn test and the edge looked like it was a little melted, which makes me think it also has some sinthetics in it.

Date: 1/24/13 9:37 AM There seems to be a lot of polyester "silk" organza, which I think is generally 100% polyester. It's often labeled "silk organza" and on closer inspection I see "100% polyester". I got some 100% silk organza for The Couture Dress and Jenius classes on Craftsy and I purchased mine on eBay (from a Hong Kong seller) and shipping was free, though it obviously took some time to arrive here in the United States. I checked our Dharma Trading and they also have silk thread, so I may purchase my next silk organza from them. They seem to have all good reviews.
Changma   Advanced Beginner NY USA Member since 2/20/12 Posts: 409	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 1/24/13 10:19 AM I just bought from Dharma, and also from a Chinese seller on eBay.The quality is about the same, although the eBay purchase is a bit stiffer.Delivery time wasn't too long.I bought it for the couture dress class from Craftsy.I bought from eBay because Dharma only had the white, and I was looking for an ivory/beige. The price wasn't too bad, so I didn't mind buying twice.

I used it for the Craftsy Couture Dress and the Jeanius Copying clothes classes. The silk takes the tracing pencils well
