edge finish for canvas? need to make a sling/lift for a yellow lab

I bought some canvas, although it's not like a sailing-weight heavy canvas. I am wondering if I can do a quick edge-finish/hem with the serger rather than some kind of foldover hem. A wide rolled edge? Just a 4-thread overlock? Or is the canvas just going to be too heavy for my serger? I do have a heavy duty Sailrite, but the edges of the canvas fray and the Sailrite only has a straight and zigzag stitch, so I'd need to fold over I guess or zigzag the edges. Getting the job done quickly is more important than looks. Thanks for any ideas. ------ Now a Babylock girl almost all the way - Ellegante 3, Evolution, and Melody. Plus a Sailrite LSZ-1 for those heavy duty projects

I used my overlocker very successfully for hundreds of covers. I used a 4 thread (for seams) and it would stop the dege fraying for you with only 1 thickness for sure. I think making the stitch length shorter (stitches closer together) could help too.The only places it didn't like was where seams met (4 thicknesses instead of 2) and there was a height discrepancy causing missed stitches. This happens anyway with thick bits. I had no adverse effects for my overlocker it is still going strong. Perhaps do a test edge first and adjust the stitch sing your normal adjustments? I'm sure it will be fine and the Lab will thank you. Let us know how you go. Rita

You might be able to use a regular double-fold binding. It was sewn on with a zig-zag stitch. ------ MartiP

It was soft under her chest and belly, but strong enough for a 70+ pound dog. It was also easy to grip. Your serger should be just fine finishing the edge of the canvas, I would not use a rolled hem, just serge the edge. ------ Proud parent of a Dwight International School Honour Roll Student

I did some testing this morning and it looks like a fairly wide rolled edge is going to work fine. Purchased bias tape works fine, since it doesn't have to be perfect. ------ ~Gem in the prairie
