How can I measure my own skirt hem?

I don't' have a hem marker and I don't have anyone to measure a hem for me. Any suggestions? This is my first post!

I've heard (but haven't tried!) that you can put dressmakers chalk (the chalky kind not the waxy kind) on a piece of string, drawing pin the string across a door frame at the height you want your hem and then twirl against the string while wearing the skirt.

Turn slowly so the chalk leaves a mark on the cloth.
