Speaking of thread holders.... thought this was a great idea!

But I also have a large thread stand that works for large cones such as you see in your link. If you look closely at that photo the thread is wound up by the spindle and over to the next point in the threading path. I think that extra spot by the spindle can add friction and tension problems. They may have done this to have the thread run in the same line as if the cone were sitting at the spindle. I spoke to my dealer and he said that was not necessary. I thought was a great idea if you are in a jam and need something fast! I still thread the normal paths when I use my stand, I don't think I'd start randomly winding thread around weird places first, I wonder what this person's reasoning was? ------ Cathryn

I have done this for ages and have an old glass beer mug that is deeper than a spool and it works very well. If your machine has a hole through the thread post it works really well. For my little Kenmore, it seems to prefer the container being on the floor behind the machine. I found this out accidentally because I didn't have room for it on my tiny workspace at work. Date: 1/29/13 6:03 PM I took a free motion class and the teacher recommended this, but she also taped a paper clip to the machine by the spool holder and ran the thread from the cup through that. It seemed to hold the thread at the same level as it comes of of the regular spool and worked well for those who tried it. Date: 2/2/13 11:49 PM When you think about how inexpensive a thread holder is though, it isn't worth it. You can use one of the ones from JAs for many years - I have one that cost about maybe 6 dollars?! OH - it's now 7.99 at JAs. And with a 50% or 40% off coupon one of these days it is a steal.The cup or jar tends to fall over when you least expect it too....sigh. ------ "Be kind whenever possible. Date: 2/3/13 6:14 AM I have this problem with my standard-size spool sometimes backing itself up on a vertical pin. I have tried various tensions, spool felt, etc. Does anyone have this problem (older Brother SM, no serger.) One sewing guy here said he could reverse the direction the bobbin threads comes out for tension problems? Garage sale season is coming up and I saw many cones last year, but didn't know you could convert them for a regular machine.
