Fairy Costume Simplicity 1792 - I am stuck and need help!

I did the bodice and it worked out great, but now I am at the skirt part and I am confused. Does anyone have this pattern - please help!! I dont understand the skirt section! There are 4 pattern pieces for the skirt: 7 front - cut 1 on fold 8 skirt back - cut 2 9 overskirt front - cut 2 on crosswise fold 10 overskirt back/side panel - cut 6 on crosswise fold The skirt front and skirt back are made of the lining fabric. why do i need to cut 2 skirt back pieces?? The overskirt pieces are made of tulle. I have a 6.5 yard long piece of tulle. It says the overskirt has 2 layers. Does that mean the skirt is 3 layers - one of lining and two of tulle? I dont get how I am supposed to cut the tulle. I dont really understand "crosswise fold" And I am not sure how/when the lining pieces get sewn on. -- Edited on 1/29/13 2:13 PM --

The reason why there are two back pieces is you will insert a zipper, and the two back pieces will join to allow that. Yes, it looks like there will be two layers of tulle over the lining fabric skirt. "Crosswise fold" means you will fold the tulle with a line that crosses from selvage to selvage. This is to specify a difference from the "normal" way of folding fabric, with a line parallel to the selvage. You may get some help/tips from some of the other fairy costume reviews (search "Disney" under patterns here on PR and they will come up). Some of the design lines are slightly different but on the whole they look like the same patterns, you may get some help there. Good luck!

Why is each layer of tulle also 3 pieces? Why couldnt they just have it be two pieces or one long piece gathered? why does it need the seams in the tulle?

I don't have this pattern either, but I suspect that it's because the pieces are gored (slightly angled from the waist like this: / ) and not just straight panels. I have a TNT Renaissance skirt pattern that calls for three large, *very* slightly gored pieces. But you're right--you certainly *can* make your life easier and cut full skirts from single lengths of fabric (I have done this many times, as well). This will make more bulk at the waist, however. So decide which you want to deal with: extra pattern pieces & seams, or working with excess fabric at the waistline. I figured there must be a reason, but I just didnt know what it was. Unfortunately I dont have time to sew today.... But tomorrow I am going to break out the pattern again and try to do the skirt. Everything else worked out well, so I am optimistic. I just have to figure out how to cut the skirt pieces. The pattern drawing of cross wise fold isnt so clear to me, but maybe it will be easier when I have the tulle in front of me If not, I might be coming back to you all. I think I also might be coming back to you when it comes to the zipper! This is the first time I am doing a zipper in clothes. Up until now I have mostly made bags (also with zippers, but that seems different!), tshirts, etc. So working with satin and organza and tulle has been a fun and different challenge ;)

PIN LEFT back edge to zipper tape, lapping back 1/8" over back." why? why 1/8" over back? over back of what? i know that is why they wrote 5/8 and 1/2 - and that the difference is this 1/8 but is the 1/8 covering the sipper teeth? "Turn upper end of zipper tape over seam allowance. Baste 3/8" from pressed edge and 1/4" below end of zipper. Stitch as based using an adjustable zipper foot and squaring stitches across lower end, breaking stitching at skirt seam." this bodice has a lining, why cant I put the zipper between the two layers and so that the zipper tape is hidden?

Patterns almost always tell you the hardest way to put in a zipper. I always put a zipper in first when I am only working with one layer and flat pieces. Once you sew everything up it is very difficult to machine sew in a zipper. With this many layers you might want to hand sew the zipper in or at least only machine sew one side down and hand sew the other side. I made a flower girl dress last spring that was very similar. You have alot of layers to work with. The zipper should be sewn onto the fashion fabric. Then the lining hand sewn down over the zipper tape hide it and to anchor the lining so yes you are thinking right about this. If this is for a child and for playtime, you could probably use an alternative like sewing velcro on the seam. The child could get it on and off easier too. Find directions on here or on youtube for a lapped zipper. If you bought a Coats & Clark zipper, the directions inside the package is easier to do than Simplicity's directions. HTH
