I decided to try my hand sewing with a knit fabric. But somehow,

I missed the lesson

that on a one-way stretch knit,

the stretch should go AROUND the body horizontally,

and not stretch up and down.

You aren't alone. I have made that error more than once..and iIm sure the honest ones of us here will 'fess up. There might be a few here who just haven't made that error yet.

That's a two way stretch fabric you used. If it stretches in all directions it is four way stretch.

I spent half of Sunday sewing a dress that is now in the trash. Luckily, I was able to claim it was just a muslin.

You guys are so kind to me.

The only upside to this is:

When I first tried the thing on, it was so TIGHT that I started to freak out thinking I REALLY must have packed on the pounds this holiday.

Right: two-way stretch. It stretches from selvedge to selvedge more than lengthwise. But what makes me nuts is: the pattern has it laid out wrong!

S'th'truth!

Always check the stretch, there are some knits that have more stretch lengthwise. It's not that common, but it does happen, ask me how I know, lol!

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

Donate to Goodwill. Someone may benefit and not know it was headed for the bin.

PattiAnn: Oh yes, absolutely I will! I'll still finish it and then donate it. I couldn't bear a TOTAL waste! And I just don't think I can suck my gut in for much more than 40 minutes at a time.

Or turn it into something else: lining for a tote bag, a reusable grocery bag, or panties, or ???.

Been there -- even after triple-checking.

It really helps to share, doesn't it?

Marjoriekh: it REALLY DOES help to share! I was very reluctant to post: I kept thinking, nobody wants to hear this stupid thing that I did. But I totally felt much better after hearing from others!
