Hi,

What would be the best fabric to make sheer curtains? I am looking for a fabric that will stand the test of time in a sunny window and that I can embroider on as well.

Thanks :)

Sheers are usually a synthetic like poly or nylon, which are also difficult to machine embroider. More expensive is 100% cotton batiste but will machine embroider beautifully with the right designs.

I have found pure linen to be remarkably resistant to sun damage--even over years of exposure.

Here is a store that carries linen in many weights and colors at excellent prices.

Their "light weight" linen weighs 3.5 oz per yard and is fairly sheer, while their "sheer" linen weighs only about 2 oz and really is gauzy sheer.

They will send generous samples to play with, and their service is fast.

Elona - Thank you(!!!) for that link. The sheers in our house are 26 years old and must be replaced. The last time I washed a pair, they shredded in the washer from age and sun damage.
I may get some samples of this linen. It should be easier to work with than the slippery poly, and hopefully no outgassing that I would have from a petrochemical fiber.
