Has anyone used any but the recommended needles?

The manual for this machine says to use size 14 (Universal) needles.
I was going to hem poly/lycra top so I tried on a scrap first. It skipped stitches and punched the fabric into the plate hole.
I tried several times, changed stitch length and pressure on the foot but nothing helped.
Then I found some size 14 stretch needles They worked much better.
When I first got the machine I contacted Brother CS and the person said to use 14's. It just seemed to be an awfully large needle for some fabrics, but I am aware that with sergers needle size is important because it can determine the clearance between the needle and the looper.
The next time I get to JoAnns I am going to get some 12 ballpoints to try.
I finally gave up, because the top had a double lapped front so I would have to go through four layers. I hemmed it with a double stretch needle on my sewing machine.
Has any one used different needles in this machine successfully?

You can use any size and needle you like in the Brother. This is one of it's good points. Having said this I mostly use #80 and #90 ballpoint needles, as well as size #90 stretch. On thin stretch fabrics I will use #75 stretch. The point is use any size from #70 to #100 and universal, ballpoint, stretch or jeans needles. Use what ever is appropriate for you fabric. HTH

Thanks. Where did you find that information? I wonder why the manual just says 14? And the person from Brother said to use 14's. (She was probably looking at the manual :-) )

The 14 Universals worked fine on a cotton knit as well as on fleece, but it just didn't seem right to use a needle that large on a fine poly/lycra knit and as it turned out, they did not work.

I could tell even with the Stretch 14's it wasn't going to sew well enough to go through four layers. Glad I gad a Stretch double needle for my sewing machine!

The next time JoAnns has a 50% off notions sale, I will stock up!

I have sewn for many years for interior designers and have done much for my grandchildren, but it has just been since November when I discovered PR that I am enthusiastic about sewing for myself, hence the new coverstitch machine. ( I am afraid I am addicted to PR!)

Thanks again!!

Good to know, Belinda - thanks.

I've only played with my 2340 a little bit but I picked up 80 & 90 universals as well as some ballpoints (80, I think) to play with. Have you used Organ needles - I found a really good deal online and picked up a lot. No worries if I break any or need to change often.

Experience. I've owned the Brother for at least 8 years, maybe more. I was one of the first people to buy it.

Edited to add: The manual only says the #90 is recommended, not that it must be used, like the Husqvarna 936 manual. It depends on what fabric you are sewing.

No Organ needles are hard to get here. Schmetz (my preferred needle brand) is easy to get so that's what I use in all my machines.

Giggle. I have read your stuff more than my manual. Glad I saved some of the info before you took it down. I understand why...but it was a sad day . Glad you are still here to help!
