I was reading on a Canadian News site (CBC) about a woman, Pamela Foster from Burlington, Ontario who blogs about Downtown Abbey and has even created a Downton Abbey Cookbook!
This is the direct link to the Blog. I haven't read much of the blog but admit I did get hooked into the details about English Tea and the foods eaten with tea. (Being of English descent, I LOVE tea and grew up on a Canadianized version of a tea ritual.)
You might be interested in the article in the CBC website. If so this is the link to the CBC article. In it, the blog and cookbook author, Pamela Foster, "culinary historian", talks about how she was blogging already about Downton and got the idea to write a cookbook based on the foods eaten/referenced on the show.

I think I want to have a "Low Tea" tea party. Maybe I will just replace making dinner with having Tea instead. (DH may divorce me if I stop making dinner.)
Oh yes... I was reading her info on how to make/serve tea. I have to disagree with her on one point. She says that if one is taking milk in their tea the milk should be added AFTER the tea has been poured. I prefer the milk be put in the cup first, then the tea poured. Perhaps it is just my imagination but I swear the tea tastes better this way. (Especially if the milk has sat out of the fridge for a bit.) As well, my English Gram would not take her tea any other way.

Based on the strong recommendation of my Welsh stepmother, I'm with you--put the milk in the cup first. Not only does it taste better, but you don't have to use a spoon to stir it.

Putting the milk or cream in the cup first also seems to keep the tea (or coffee) hotter. I've never tried to prove this scientifically, but pouring cold liquid into a hot beverage always seems to cool it off more than the reverse.

Thank you for the links.
My Great Grandma always put a little milk in her tea as well. I cannot remember if she put it in before or after but a small milk container was left out for everyone having tea or coffee.

Milk in first was to protect the very fine china or porcelaine. Stopped boiling water hitting a cold cup. Very upper class, proved you could buy the very expensive stuff.
If I'm just using a mug and a teabag, the milk goes in last as it cools the boiling water too much and the tea tastes horrible.

In the royal household, the milk is heated and then put in the cuppa, then the hot beverage.
