Hi everyone,
I am so relieved to have found this site full of amazing talented sewers! Now that I have a sewing machine that actually works, I am ready to finish sewing the curtains for my boys' bedroom. They picked out two different colors, so I am planning to do a wide stripe across the bottom. What is the best stitch to use to join the two different colors? The curtains won't be lined so there is no hiding the seams :-).

Also- I am just now exploring the world of piping and rick rac, etc., would it look nice to use something like that between the color blocks or will that be overkill?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

So glad you found us. Welcome aboard.
I would sew the bottom panel to the top panel then serge the seam. If you don't have a serger then check and see if your machine has an overcast foot. Using the overcast foot and a zig zag stitch. Or you could press the seam to one side then top stitch using a long stitch length, 3.5 or 4.

I'm not sure if it would affect the way the curtains hang (in which case it might not be a good idea), but you could try either a French seam (and iron the seams toward the bottom of the panels), or a flat felled seam.

Either would look finished on the reverse side.

Stitch wrong sides together, trim the seams and press toward the darker fabric and then top stitch to enclose the trimmed seam.

If you have extra scraps, practice this first.

In fact, always test when doing a new or different project. Use the same fabric, needle and thread to tweak the stitch length or types.

Thank you so much everyone for the suggestions.

I had been looking at the flat felled a few weeks ago when randomly browsing sewing blogs and was interested in it, but didn't know the name and how to find it again- so now that mystery is solved!

Regarding testing first- usually I do a quick test to make sure the tension is ok. Is that what you are referring to or should I be testing for something else as well?

How do the stitches look. Do you need a different size needle, or a change in stitch length.

For example, the thicker the fabric the longer the stitch length setting. This releases more thread to form the stitch and does not necessary result in a longer stitch....sometimes you just gotta see it to believe it!
