Date: 2/1/13 1:23 PM I purchased a package of fat quarters; small suiting plaids for a man's quilt, made by Moda.
These are brushed cottons that actually look like wool.
I love the colors, browns and tans mostly.
The problem is that they were cut so poorly that I have to square them up drastically and I'm losing a lot of yardage.
Where I should be able to get 12 square per FQ, after trimming I can only get nine.
Is this unusual? Is the cutting normally done by Moda or by the outlet who sells it? ------

Date: 2/1/13 3:50 PM Not sure who cuts it but I would contact customer service, sounds like an infirior prodoct and you should get a refund/replacement. |

Date: 2/1/13 4:03 PM I JUST had this complaint against a Moda jelly roll that had a few plaid strips in it. The plaid was cut so badly off.
I dealt with it, since it was only a few pieces for me that were so bad, but a fat quarter bundle? I would be REALLY ticked!
Did it have any kind of packaging label, sometimes they are wrapped with a Moda ribbon, or are in a plastic warp.

It's iinteresting that you had the same issue with Moda plaid.
Yes, the fabric was in a bag with a Moda label on it.
Let me add that not every FQ was cut REALLY badly; some of the patterns are checks or very small designs that aren't as noticable if cut askew. But I still had to square everything before I could begin cutting.
The fabrics were purchased online from Hancock's of Pacudah.

If you're using these plaids for quilt blocks, I suggest you leave them alone. Roberta Horton's book Calico and Beyond spends a good amount of time on this concept. The book is out of print, and if you want a copy, try to find a real copy, not the print-on-demand. (those of us who own the original version generally don't let go of this gem).
She illustrates how plaid and stripe fabrics in quilt blocks that are cut to perfection, tend to look quite static in a quilt. She illustrates examples both ways. Her message is that garments need plaids to match, quilts don't.
I learned a lot, as I agree that the wonky plaids and stripes really looked better. The perfectly cut plaids and stripes looked rather "static" in the whole quilt. Now, if I have a perfectly printed plaid or stripe fabric, I will purposely cut it off grain.
Of course, it is all a matter of personal preference.
I hope this helps. Or maybe I misunderstood the problem...

I was able to pick up a used copy for next to nothing on Amazon.
I will have to see what you've described because I cannot see it with my mind's eye.
When I look at the plaids off-kilter they just look wonky to me.
So I will definitely be looking into this in the book.
And, yes, I am using these plaids as quilt blocks. ------
