I stopped by Tuesday Morning the other day and was pleasantly surprised to see a Kenmore Mini Ultra for $59.99 (actually there were two in the store).

They are also on their website (see the link above). They appear to be new-in-box machines.

I already have a white one and a blue one, so I really don't need another, but boy, was I fighting my SMAD. For all of you who wanted one and didn't get one when they were on clearance from Sears, now is your chance.

PS. The ones I saw were blue.

Does the machine have a light?

Yes, it does have a light.

It's a simple (but capable) machine. There are many old threads about here on PR, if you want to find out more about it.

Thanks. I just ordered one on-line. SewVacDirect had one a while back but it was gone before I could decide. It says it has drop-in bobbin but all the (older) reviews here say it is vertical bobbin so will see if they changed it, but I doubt it. They are so cute, and I think my 8-yr-old granddaughter would like it.

I love my mini ultra! I bought it on sale at Sears several years ago as just a basic sewing machine to start out on. It's survived numerous people learning how to sew on it (and all the mistakes that come with that), 3 moves, and a lack of any cleaning/oiling/maintenance for a while and still sews great! In fact, in some ways I like it more than the machine I replaced it with.
On a side note, can you buy a 1/4" foot for it? And if so, where? Thanks!

Do your machines have a vertical bobbin? If so, I think Janome (or maybe generic vertical bobbin) feet (it will have to have an ankle adaptor for quick release feet) for vertical bobbins should work. The machine is made by Janome AFAIK.

I could not resist checking this machine out because I work near a store and live near a store. I bought one of the two and have to say it's cute as a bug and will sew basics! I can use my other TOL machines for complex tasks. Maybe I'll even write a review
! Mine is blue.

Ya got me. I'm usually REALLY good at avoiding the SMAD, but I heard such good things about this little machine. I've been thinking about having a travel machine, as my others are beasts to move. I like the Gem and others, but just couldn't justify the $. The TM near me had one, so I snatched it up. Going to play with it today!

Another fan here! Before the mini-ultra, Janome came out with the Jem. My dealer at that time was at a huge show and he told me how impressed he was with it. He said they were actually made very well and "these are not toys!". that was probably 15 or more years ago now. Janome improved on that model over the next decade adding more features but the mini is that original Jem..just in blue for Sears. My daughter has one and loves it and can't be persuaded to use the more featured machine I gave her. I did hem some heavy men's jeans w/ the mini and it was scary but it did fine! that's 8 (?) layers at the seam intersection and that bump was 1/2" thick and hard as rock! I miss my mini.

I have one--previously enabled by folks here--very happy. Generally it's my downstairs machine, but I also got it for travel (took it in a tote bag when visiting a friend recently, and made her slippers with it).

I thought its cuteness would lure my daughter into sewing, but not so far. When and if that happens she'll probably need her own machine. Sewing comrades--if there's ever a My Little Pony mini I need to know about it IMMEDIATELY.
