It's time for the first 2-week Challenge Contest of 2013. I will be your Contest Manager and will try to answer your questions and guide you along the way.

February 2013 Challenge Contest
Inspired by Pinterest: Home Dec Challenge
February 16-28, 2013

Are you addicted to Pinterest? Are your boards overflowing with pictures of that perfect throw pillow or charming curtains or other home decor that never seems to get made? Or is there a home dec tutorial that you've been meaning to try? Then the Inspired By Pinterest: Home Dec Challenge is the contest for you!

Sew something for your home inspired by something you've seen on Pinterest or pinned yourself. The inspiration pin(s) can be a tutorial, a retail item or series of pins/mood board.

The project must clearly be inspired by the original pin(s). List changes you have made and what features you have kept.

The project can be sewn from a commercial pattern, but simply pinning that pattern does not qualify as an inspiration pin for the purposes of this contest.

Review requirements: A picture or link to your inspiration pin and your finished project must both be included; they can be put into the same picture.

General Rules for all Contests
1. All reviews must be entered for submission by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the last day of the contest. It is suggested to start your review as a Work In Progress (private or public) so that you can get any bugs ironed out prior to the deadline.
2. Patterns MAY be muslined prior to the start of this contest however; fabric for contest garment may NOT be cut prior to the start of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the start of the contest.
3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome.
4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry, preferably on a live model.
5. Interpretation of rules is subject to the discretion of the contest manager and the contest committee.

Contest Eligibility: ***Rule #1 is changed for 2013
1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who is a registered member on the site before the contest begins is eligible to enter.
2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.
3. Any member who's won first place in a contest on Pattern Review that ended in the previous four-month period is ineligible to win another contest (during that four-month period).

The first, second and third place winners will be decided by member vote. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners.

Voting guidelines:

Each member can vote on up to five entries.

Voting will begin 2 days after contest closes and will close 7 days after voting starts.

Because of the high quality of the garments we're seeing entered in PR Contests, we're setting forth some guidelines that may help you choose when voting. Consider how well the entry fulfills each of the following criteria in order to narrow down your votes:
1. How well does the item fit the criteria stated in the contest rules? How well does it fit the spirit of the rules?
2. Are the construction methods, including but not limited to seam finishes, lining techniques, etc, well suited to the design? To the fabric?
3. Is the fabric choice well suited to the design? Are the lining and interfacing choices appropriate?
4. Is the review complete and well written?
5. Taking into account the stated ability level of the entrant, how well is the item constructed?
6. Creative points. You may choose to give extra credit here for an entry that reflects additional creativity (embellishment, fabric choice, etc.).
7. Complexity of the project. Relate this to the skill level of the participant. If a participant is a beginner then a princess seam may get the same complexity level as an underarm gusset gets for an advanced sewer. This is purely subjective, but a complex item might garner more points than a simple one if a tie-breaker is needed.

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone is inspired by and to see the finished projects.

The second post of this thread will be for answering questions and for rules clarification.

Prizes
First Prize: $100 Gift Certificate from Fashion Fabrics Club
Second Prize: $50 Gift Certificate from Fashion Fabrics Club

This post is reserved for contest related Q and A, as well as rules clarification. Feel free to ask any and all questions related to the contest, and I will get back to you as soon as I can. If I come up with any useful links, I will post them here as well.

Q: Can I change the type of fabric and the colour(s)?
A: Yes you can -- your project should be inspired by the design elements of the Pinterest Home Dec item but not necessarily an exact duplicate.

Q: Is a bed skirt considered home dec?
A: Yes as would other types of bedding -- i.e. pillows, comforters, quilts, etc.

Q: Is a sewing machine cover considered home dec?
A: Yes as it decorates the sewing space.

I wasn't going to enter this contest, but I found a picture of a pillow that calls to me. It has what looks like an applique, but I have no idea what it's made of. Is it okay to do my best case guess when I have no idea what it's made of? It's a commercial pillow that is sold out, so I have no way to getting the information. I did print out at picture of the pillow so I can cut out the applique. It's a good sign when the hubby likes it Is it okay to change the colors? Just to make the colors more suited to our house and tastes.

Your project should be clearly inspired by the pinned project -- fabrics and colours would not have to be identical. Just make sure to list the changes you have made in your review.

Look forward to seeing your project inspiration and your interpretation.

Well, I think this is a sign that I'm not going to enter the RTW contest, and should enter this. I had pinned some tutes last fall for something I wanted to make for my sister's living room. I even bought some fabric (although could use a 3rd coordinating pattern) and zippers.

Here's the problem though. These are floor pillows/poufs and I need to ship them. To make it easier, my plan was to ship the empties to her home, and do a Walmart ship-to-store for the fill. Not sure it would be worth entering the empty pillows. Also not sure I have anything the right size to stick inside them. Will have to see....

Donna, I would go ahead and make the floor pillows. You could stuff them with some blankets, sheets, towels, or whatever you have around to fill them up. That way they'll look ok to take the pictures for the contest and you can empty them to send as planned.

Totally agree with ChrisS -- you could stuff the covers with whatever for the purposes of photos for your contest entry.

I say "Go For It!!!"

This sounds like an interesting idea for a contest and I'll be interested in seeing what people come up with. I get my inspiration from a whole internet full of interesting images, so it seems like it will be a real challenge for people to be restricted to a single website.

You know, I really wasn't planning to enter this contest. But after searching pinterest the throw pillow I saw call to me. I will be shopping the thrift store Wednesday to pick up the supplies. It's honestly easier-and cheaper-to get what i need at the thrift store. The pillow is still being sold so I know exactly what it's made of. And blowing up a picture of the pillow shows HOW it's made. It's going to be fun trying this. And it should look good in our house.

Can't wait to see your entry -- are you going to give us a sneak peak of your inspiration pillow?
