Date: 2/7/13 1:32 PM I would like some advice on which batting to use for a table runner.
I use Quilter's Dream for quilts. But, I don't want the table runner to "pucker up" when I wash it. I don't want a think batting because I plan to quilt the runner.
Any ideas? |

Date: 2/7/13 1:34 PM I think warm and natural is great if you want it to be thin and flatter, but it may shrink and cause some puckers.
What about a thin poly batting? Quilter's Dream makes several different kinds of batting, which one do you use? ------ Cathryn |

Date: 2/7/13 1:47 PM What about using pre-shrunk flannel? Should lay flat. ------ Linda

Date: 2/7/13 3:12 PM The Quilter's Dream I use is Request - the all cotton one. So, you mean that a poly batting won't shrink for me, but can still be washed. I see.
And, I probably don't have to use a Quilter's Dream product - I can use anything that's sold at Joann's - just as long as I "pick a poly".
Or, I can use flannel - just wash it a couple of times before I use it as a batting so if its going to shrink it will do so before I sew it into the runner.
Yes??

Date: 2/7/13 4:01 PM Poly won't shrink but what about your cotton? If it's yardage you'll preshrink that right?
I like using thin Poly even in my quilts (I live in Arizona so thicker makes no sense lol). Mostly I don't bother with J's... Walmart has the thin poly batting cheap and it works great on table runners and place mat's (and Mug Rugs).
If you wash the flannel several time before hand it won't shrink either.
------ I have great enthusium for sewing, but lack talent to be great.

Date: 2/7/13 4:21 PM I mostly use craft fleece in table runners. I always prewash my fabric. "puckering" is then minimal. I am not making any heirlooms, I just want it to look nice for the short haul! I love Quilters Dream for quilts but don't use it on table runners. ------ Pfaff Performance 5, a few Berninas, several vintage multiple manufacturers. Love all my machines!

Date: 2/7/13 5:10 PM I try to use something that will insulate the table for my runners. I put hot pans on my runners....
So cotton flannel or even wool yardage (preshrunk, of course) or one of those products for potholders. ------ blog: goodworks1.wordpress.com

If I use the crafty type batting, will it give me trouble quilting? |

Date: 2/7/13 6:14 PM I have not had a problem, but then what I have mostly done on table runners is some stippling, or very simple FM designs, with a lot of SITD and straight/curved lines, grids. I am not a beginner at FMQ. But I will say that I have not had any problems with craft fleece, or the heat stuff (cant think of the name) with all the practice I have done on potholders! But an 8" square is a different animal than a table runner ------ Pfaff Performance 5, a few Berninas, several vintage multiple manufacturers. Love all my machines!

Date: 2/7/13 7:44 PM I'm at the stage where I'm quilting just SITD or grids/curves also. So, I think I'll use the crafty batting because I want it to be thicker than flannel.
Thanks everybody!
