Machine embroidery on quilts

Question: do you use water soluble stabilizer for a quilt block? So there is less bulk after it's washed away? I used tear away AND water soluble on the animals, because I was trying to avoid puckering on the cotton. I did have a few puckers, but it's not noticeable after it's quilted. I was wondering though about using multiple layers of water soluble....besides the fact that it would be expensive, any other negatives about using it? ------ Cathryn

Date: 2/8/13 4:16 PM Cat because quilting cotton is so light I use a cut away and make my cut way the size of the whole block and leave it except for trimming 1/4" around the seams so no bulk. I also cut out a bigger block or area where the design is going to be and trim it down after it's embroidered cos it does draw it up some and might throw your block off. Another reason for a less dense design. I generally use just a plain fabric for the whole block and frame around it. I was using a sticky but didn't like the results. It's a art to get the cotton not to have wrinkles around the design and have to realize you can't use dense designs it just doesn't work out well. We had a talk here about using a twill in place of the cotton and that would probably work for denser designs. I was trying to find a decent cotton twill but couldn't locally. Also I sometimes just use an embroidery stippling design after it's together and don't use any stabilizer for that. Depending on the quilt, will hoop it or pin it to the hoop. Date: 2/8/13 4:48 PM I do embroidered blocks and stabilize according to the density of the embroidery. I also create my own quilting motifs as I like something other than stippling and flowers. Do you embroider the designs on individual quilt blocks, then sew the blocks together, and then make your quilt sandwich and quilt? Or is it done some other way? I've only made one rail fence queen sized quilt and one quilt sized for practice before I quilted the big one. I just stitched in the ditch. By the way, that quilt is just adorable!

Start with a block larger than what you intend for the quilt, then after the embroidery is finished, trim away the excess stabilizer and then press from the back and then trim the block to the size needed. Do use polyester for children's quilt just in case someone decides to use bleach when the quilt is washed. The designs and saying are still available as is the magazine that has the instructions.
