Can't decide which machine to buy!! Have been looking at Jenome and Necchi and even a small viking.
sapphiresuzi Intermediate OH Member since 10/14/09 Posts: 13	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 2/8/13 3:58 PM I started out thinking I wanted to buy an intermediate machine since I have both ends of the spectrum (I own a Viking Saphire 850 and a Janome Jem Gold 2). I was sold on the Jenome Magnolia 7330 after reading reviews on line, but then when I tried it and saw the very limited manual I am not so sure even though it sews great. The dealer then showed me the Necchi EX 30 and the Janome 3160QDC. Both have about the same features except the Janome is $100 more and has 60 different stitches vs. the Necchi with 30. I really loved the Necchi, but don't know too much about them and if they are a good machine to buy. Really confused now . . . started out ready to spend about $400 and now looking at $700-$800. I love the needle up/down and lock stitch features and both the Necchi and Janome 3160QDC also have automatic thread cutters and include small extension tables and hard cases. Help!! What advice to you have??? Oh also looked at the Viking H Class 100 Q which is on sale this month for $399. Is this a good enough machine??

They've recently made a comeback of sorts for themselves by coming out with a new line of machines, all recognized as being one or another Janome model and maybe not all original to the U.S. market, either. -- Edited on 2/8/13 4:11 PM --

I have tried to learn FMQ on my Sapphire but seemed to have so many tension problems. Wasn't sure if it was just because I was learning or it was the sm. But I have read that the Sapphires do have tension problems and I bought mine right after it was first out. Thought maybe a different machine would be better to try it on. Do you think the Necchi 30EX would be adequate for this??

You are the one determining the stitching process with the motion of the hands and sometimes the upper tension has to be adjusted to account for this motion. Make up mini quilt samples and use them as you try FMQ on the various machines to see if there is one you like better than the other.

Is there a specific function you want to do in it? I have seen the Necchi - and as they are Janome built - they are good. I have also made some garments in the past. I like the dedicated stitch buttons and the start/stop button and the sissors button too.

I haven't been back to try again though, and I need to do that. I think the tension is a bit tight on the Vikings, as it is on a lot of machines these days. Good luck! Experimenting with the tensioning helps. I have had a fair share of troubles in FMQ myself, and then after reading over on Quiltingboard,com I see that many many people do have trouble and it takes a lot of tweaking.
