Date: 2/8/13 10:31 PM Tonight I made a knit top for my daughter that has two fabrics, one is slinky knit. I used a size 80 stretch (not ball point) needle and have had nothing but issues sewing on the 635.
When I did a 5mm straight stitch for basting, the bobbin thread looked like zig-zag on the back. When I stitched with a wobble stitch (.5mm zig-zag), I kept getting thread nests on the back.
I am sewing with Gutterman all-purpose sewing thread, Schmetz needle.
Thanks for any suggestions! |

Date: 2/8/13 11:28 PM I sewed all kinds of knits all the time with my 635 with perfect results. I used ball point needles. I mainly use only size 12. If the fabric is really slippery, you might need a Teflon foot like the #52. I'd try a ball point needle and see how that goes first.

Date: 2/9/13 11:56 AM Slinky is a real bear to sew. Have you tried Mettler thread? None of my Bernina machines sew their best with Gutermann.
Also, problems on the bottom of the fabric sometimes mean you haven't threaded the top correctly.

Date: 2/9/13 2:02 PM Yes I agree with Chris. Always rethread as a first try and make sure you have your pressure foot up when you thread to release the tension disks. Use the same thread top and bottom and use a ball point needle. Have you tried the thread drop test with the bobbin to check it? How well does it stitch on 2 layers of woven fabric? Try not using the needle down button but use your heel on the foot pedal for that function. This is a lovely machine and this isn't normal for a 635.

 1 member likes this. Back in the 70's when all fabrics were knit and Stretch n Sew classes were the rage, we were told to use ball point needles, 100 % Polyester thread - not cotton and apply a little stretch to the fabric while sewing so that the seam could stretch and relax.
Also on side seams, you were to start from the hem and sew up.
I noticed that today some use a small zigzag stitch which is fine.
Thread nests suggest faulty thread either for the needle or bobbin.
That's about all I remember from Polyester days. Sandy |
