Subject: Jean Pocket Bags Date: 2/12/13 2:52 PM

I'm looking at making my first pair of jeans here in the next week or so and wondered what might be some of your favorite material(s) for the (jeans) pocket bags?

I've been looking at material and it's a little confusing to say the least. There is linen, rayon, silk, cotton/silk, cotton/rayon, wovens and on and onI'm sure there is TONs and tons more to add to that list and so much that it would make me dizzy ;)
I'm leaning to the cotton/rayon types thinking might feel nicer against the skin. Maybe I'm over thinking the whole darn thing.

I'm extending the pocket bags on my misses RTW jeans because they are so short that the front pockets are worthless. My chapstick falls out. WTH? Men's jeans, which I also wear, still have functional pockets.

I've followed a suggestion from here on PR: use quilting cotton for some really cool pocket bags that make me smile every time put on those jeans.

You can also get pocketing fabric. I've occasionally found it at independent fabric stores, especially those catering to Amish clients.

For pocket bags, I use the most outrageous pattern fabric I've got, which is usually a quilting cotton. Why? Well, they're my pants and I want something unique vs. the boring ho-hum pocket fabric that is used in RTW.

Cotton/rayon should be fine. The fibre is really up to you. The only rules I go by are that it is fine/lightweight enough that it won't add bulk and secondly, that is will wear fairly well. If you are like me an put car keys in your pocket, it can wear a hole in a silk lining fairly quickly. Quilting cottons can be fun and also left overs from a lightweight/tight woven shirting.

Love to hear how your jeans turn out.

Thanks ladies for your replies. All were helpful

I will let you know how the jean project comes out even if I sew the zipper on the backside
