This sounds like one of those Incredibly Doltish Questions, but I bought some lovely cotton velvet curtain panels for the yardage, and I honestly can't tell which way the nap goes! I'd say it's uniformly fuzzy, and not particularly softer or richer-looking one way or the other.

Is there another way to tell?

Thanks!

Hold it up to a window and brush it with your hand. Velvet can be a lot like corduroy--smooth your hand one way and it's a different tone.

Light should hit the nap differently. Try different light sources and stand back and look. Sometimes the printing on the selvedge (assuming you have any) could give you a clue. If you can't tell I probably won't make a difference if it's with or against the nap.

It goes whichever way you want it to go! Just be consistent, having all your pattern pieces the same way up. That will avoid any possible colour differences which aren't obvious now but might become obvious when you are wearing the garment.

If you can't tell, then don't worry about it. Pick one direction, and STICK WITH IT.

Use a safety pin etc to mark This Way Up and make sure every piece you cut has the nap running in the same direction...whichever direction you decided to use.

Picking a direction to use if it is not obvious would be my choice. I've used pins and tape to mark nap or my choice for the front side on fabrics when either was not clear.

which ever direction you decide on, good ole blue painters tape with an arrow drawn on it will be a sanity saver as you work on your project
