Do you wind cone thread onto regular spools?

So I put the cone upside down (narrow side down) on the spool holder thing and put the plastic cone shaped from my serger into the cone (also narrow side down) onto the post. My machine has a round felt thing that would go at the bottom of the spool between the thread cone and the machine. Does that make any sense? If not, I'll take a pic for you.

If you can get the thread so it comes into the first thread guide in a reasonably straight line, you should be able to just use a cone stand. This is easier on machines that have the spool on the top or back, but you can make it work on anything, with a little thought. Dritz sell a cone thread holder that's available in just about every fabric store in the US. You do NOT want one. It's junk. It's flimsy plastic and doesn't work well. There are similar ones, that have a metal base, and metal rod. You want one of those. If you're willing to screw some screws into your table, you can get a cheap cone stand from a mechanic (cleaner's supply also sell them, I think). You can also screw one of those into a piece of wood and use it only when needed. if you go thread stand route, get one that holds at least two cones, it's very handy.

Date: 2/17/13 8:38 AM Here's the thread stand I have Superior Thread Stand I used to have one of these Metal Thread Stand I gave that one away when I moved because I rarely used it. The thread stands work well for metallics too. These stands are well weighted so that they don't tip over, the cheapie ones aren't worth taking home. I wanted it for the horizontal capability on large cones and for metallics. Nice to know it works so well.

I will probably try this sooner or later as I have a lot of cones in the thread stash. There is also another gadget that will wind onto spools which I don't own and haven't tried but have considered buying. I THINK it is called a dealy bob or something like that.

Date: 2/17/13 8:52 AM Oh I used to stick a screw eye into the wall above the machine and thread a cone up and through that to use cones. Now I use a metal thread stand. Some people thread from their serger's poles over to the machine.
