creating a sewing space on a budget it needn't cost the earth!

Date: 2/17/13 12:57 PM this is just a quick story to illustrate for those daunted by the cost of setting up a sewing space/corner that it need not be that bad. I have just spent a few days at my sister's home. She is in the process of sewing her wedding dress, and intends to keep it a complete surprise (from start to finish) from her fiance. Naturally sewing downstairs is not going to work well with this in mind. She's been working very hard, both at work and for her part time masters, so her fiance and I (on his day off) decided to create a little surprise. I wanted to find her a sewing table so she could set up a space in the attic. We discussed visiting second hand shops, but before doing so he checked the internet. There on ebay was a metal desk, with a two drawer deep storage box on offer for just 10 euros at a local graphics store. Its the kind you could stand two people on and it wouldnt even flex. Perfect for a sewing machine. We picked it up that day and just managed to fit it in his car. The neighbour (luckily not me!) helped him get it up the two sets of stairs. Had my sister liked the second item we found she could even have had a free cutting table (someone was offering a long collapsable table from Ikea). But she didnt feel it was needed. What was priceless was seeing her face when I brought her up to the attic saying I'd tidied it up and wanted her to look. She was extremely happy! -- Edited on 2/17/13 12:59 PM --

Here is a tip I wish I had known long ago .. On most nearly all desks.. you can remove the top off.. look to the underside to find how the top was attached.. then unscrew the top.. makes moving much easier.. Diningroom tables almost all do this too.. as anyone buying the newer put it together yourself type of furniture knows.. Even on some chairs and couches.. the arms are only bolted on.. which makes it so much easier to reupholster.. Anyhow.. on large heavy desk.. taking the top off before moving is almost a necessity..

As I had no one to move it for me. I brought this desk in 1985 that's how old it is. It's work very well through the years. Just wish it was a tad lower. ------ quiltingwolf.blogspot.com

For my seing machines I have been using the 4 foot long heavy plastic resin folding banquet tables from Staples or Office Max. they also come in 6 foot length. I can raise the legs to make the table higher and I use that as a cutting table with my mats ontop and one I use with my serger and older Bernina. After buying my Janome 12,000 which was heavy. I needed something super strong because it would shake during embroidery. I had an older, smaller kitchen table that was wood, and had a white tile top. My husband cut the legs down to accommodate me being able to sew comfortably on it and it is strong and when the machine is in embroidery mode I have no problems. I also put my plastic bin with drawers underneath one side. It works very welll. ------ Janome 12,000 Bernina 1530 Elna Carina Elna 704
