Date: 2/17/13 5:57 PM I'm trying to get a group started for garment sewers in Florida. I live in Gainesville, but I'm not sure how many people here sew clothing. Right now I'm just putting the word out there to see how many people would be interested in connecting with others who share their passion. I hoping that eventually we can meet up in one of the bigger cities and chat, swap patterns/fabric, go fabric shopping, etc. I blog at Shona Stitches.

 1 member likes this. I sew garments and I live on the Treasure Coast of FL, although I am well over 50 years of age. I think garment sewers are rare due to the fact that Home Ec. is no longer offered in schools. That is where I learned to sew among other issues. Also, clothing is cheaper to buy anymore and the styles change so quickly. Learning how to sew a garment correctly, fitting it properly, using a classic design that will last takes time. In this society of instantaneous gratification, it seems the younger generation does not care to invest the time to learn to sew garments. It just be my "old stick-in-the-mud mindset, but I am just saying:). I wish you luck in finding a group of young sewers in FL. |

I am a fashion sewist and live in Gainesville, but I am not under 50, am 55. I agree, there doesn't seem to be many of us in this area. There seem to be greater numbers in other areas of Florida. Good luck in your search!

Date: 2/18/13 9:21 AM I'm on the north coast of Atlantic above Jacksonville but belong to Jax ASG. We have a handful of garment sewers here.... Your idea sounds nice.
