And you thought quiltng copyrights are confusing

I can make it poster size would make a great stonehenge applique project. However I'm confused if I can use it. I can download the picture. And I went to some other art sites claiming free art etc and saw that you have to pay for stuff etc. If that's is the case why do they allow you download pictures there are easy ways to prevent this. Wolf I guess I will email them to see but but I want to blow it up first at home to how it would work. Never mind I think I answered my own questions you have to purchase the right to use it and they charge you different amounts depending on size. I guess could use it for my own use but my project could never see the light of day beyond my own home. NO online stuff, nothing. However I could change it in some way and for my own use I don't see why there would be problem. Unless it would turn out the best thing I've ever done and I couldn't show it to anyone. Date: 2/20/13 2:21 PM Keep in mind that copyright rules also cover works derived from the original work. There's a persistent bit of "common knowledge" floating around the internet that says if you take a work and change some percentage of it (30%, for example), then it's not a violation of copyright. This is not true. However, an idea cannot be copyrighted. A wolf silhouette filled with curved shapes can be yours, as long as it is clear that it is not a modified copy of the original image. Out of curiosity, how much would it cost to license the image? And what would you be licensing it for? For example, once you've made your wonderful wolf quilt, can you then sell patterns derived from the quilt? Do you have a friend who can draw? Perhaps you two can trade - a wolf drawing for you, with the rights to use it and you can sew something for him/her? Curious, CMC

I think someone in this business should contact the original author and suggest a pattern for it. I think it's beautiful. It works as a quilt project on so many levels. Welllll That wolf (other than the swirls in the middle) is the same as the "Howling wolf", Wolf Tattoo (only head is reversed and empty), wolf scream silhouette, Wolf in mountains. (your Abstract Wolf), Wolf Howling, Sihouette of Wolf, Wolf with a She-Wolf and that is only from the 1st page of search I did... Ok so #1 perhaps the identical person did them all? #2 - I do not believe an outline of a howling wolf (without the pattern inside) is a copyrighted image -- I bet you could find something similar in an Encylopedia (do we have those anymore?)... ! That said, if you go to MSN clipart (for free home use) I bet you'd find the same "outline". I am ALL for copyrights and trademarks... yet, I find it impossible to believe just the "outline" of a wolf howling belongs to zoto alone!
