Hi,
I want to find some high-quality cotton jersey and interlock: not gauzy-thin but thick enough to be opaque at the very least (for the jersey); with good drape; made with long-staple cotton.

I can't find any store online that mentions whether or not the cotton jersey or interlock is made with long-staple cotton. Almost none of the online stores mention the weight per unit of its fabric (NearSea Naturals does, so does High End Fabrics).

How do you folks find really good quality cotton knit fabric? And do the people at the stores you use actually know much about the fabrics?

p.s. Maybe it's just the fabric stores I have been to here in Toronto, but what the sales people know about the fabrics for sale there could be written on the head of a super-fine pin. I can understand that the people who work at the jobbers-type of fabric store might not know what double-knit is, but when the staff at the large chain-stores don't know what double-knit is, I must despair.

Seattle Fabrics has nice heavier weight cotton/lycra, and one of our local fabrics stores here in Austin can order lighter weights for you:
TexStyles. Phone: 512-212-4733

If you really want drape you'll need to go with something with at least a little rayon or poly. Cotton doesn't really drape unless it is very lightweight.

I just received an order from EOS of organic cotton spandex knit. It's wonderful. You could get swatches if you are interested.

What about Oakville Sewing Centre? Linda has a bigger store now, has relocated, see below. She does ( or did) mail ordesr too, tho its 5 years since i was in that area of ON. Always very helpful.

I ordered organic cotton knit from Natures Fabrics about 4 yrs ago. Thick and lovely drape.

If you can find some of the Siltex cotton interlock you'd be delighted. It it long fibre, ring spun, Canadian made. Wazoodle carried it in the early days but now about the only place I know that carries it is Distinctive Sewing (online) in Oakville but it's not in very many colours. This could be the online version of Oakville Sewing Centre? It's not cheap - about $14/m but it is wonderful fabric. There is also a poly/cotton blend by Siltex but I've never used that.

In the mid 80s when I got my first serger there was a shop in Kingston from which I bought some ivory cotton Siltex knit. AT the time, I didn't know anything about it but the sales lady made a point of oohing and ahhing over this fabric. So, I bought it and went home to try out my new serger , making a simple pull on skirt and popover top with cap sleeves & faced neckline. I wore that thing to death and it was dressy enough that I could wear it to the office. Do you know, I still have that skirt - and I wear it in the summer around the house (got rid of the top years ago in a purge but somehow the skirt got missed.) It never pilled, held its shape and was just generally fantastic fabric.

It's hard to find now but I just ordered 3 bolts (15m each!) directly from the Siltex mill for my own use and can hardly wait to get into it for the summer. I have a business number (for teaching) so could order but have to meet the 15m minimum.

If you can find it anywhere, do try some - you won't be sorry

Cristine Jonson and Marcy Marcy Tilton have good quality cotton knits.

Like PattyE said, EmmaOneSock always has nice fabrics.

Gorgeous Fabrics always has a good selection and you can order swatches.

GF inventory sells fairly quicklky, like EOS, both ship quickly and have good customer service.

There is also Alabama Chanin, it's a little pricey, but organic and though I've not tried it, I would imagine the quality is superior.
