I've been reading through threads trying to figure out what I need to buy in a sleeve board. I have seen posts about some being too wide to be useful which leads me to the question below.

What measurement am I looking for to be able to slide a sleeve over the end properly? I'm thinking somewhere around 3 inches

I'm really liking the looks of this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-Double-Sided-Sleeve-Board-Ironing-Board-White-Color-Made-In-U-S-A-/300788153137?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item46085efb31

Kowgiirl, a 3" sleeveboard might be perfectly all right for you, or it might be completely useless. The answer depends on your wrist circumference and what you plan to sew.

My wrist circumference is only 6", and I sew tailored wool jacket with tapered sleeves. My sleeves did not fit on standard sleeveboards. So I searched on ebay until I found a sleeveboard that was narrow enough. My sleeveboard has two sides measuring, 1.5" and 2". It's a bit rickety and seems to have been handmade by someone many decades ago, but sleeveboards that are narrow enough for me are almost impossible to find.

In order to determine maximum sleeve board width you can use, take the garment with the narrowest sleeve opening you own, flatten the wrist area down, and measure the width. Then subtract 1.5" (to approximate two times the typical thickness of a 3/4" sleeve board and padded cover). So if my jacket sleeve measures 4" across the wrist and my sleeve board is 3/4" thick, the maximum width of a sleeveboard that will work for me is 2.5" wide (4" - 1.5" = 2.5").

I have that one. I think you would really like it. You might also consider a seam roll and a seam stick in addition to the sleeve board.

I have a sleeve board that I inherited from an aunt. It is two sided. One side is about 4 inches all the way down. The other side is 3.5 inches at the wide end and tapers to 2". I've never looked to see how much they vary. And I don't make much that has skinny arms without a placket on something.
But it has worked fine.

I got one and found I rarely use it. I got a ham and a sleeve roll about the same time. I use the ham the most to press the shoulder seams. But most of my tops are short sleeves. Perhaps if you make long sleeves a sleeve board becomes quite useful?
