Other than what you can buy from a dealer are there options for other materials if you desire to leave the stabalizer in place.

tulle/netting is often used for a topping in towels

I bought some Sulky TenderTouch to use as stabilizer for loosely-woven fabric, but I guess it's main purpose is for embroidery applications.

Not adding bulk, would be iron- on Tricot interfacing. Although there is a similar product for machine embroidery, and they are applied after the embroidery is finished and stabilizer has been trimmed away.
