before or after you sew the seam?

I love the look of a hong kong finish, and I want to add it to all my projects, willy-nilly. But, I'm not sure whether I should be applying it to the cut pieces before they're seamed (which seems like the easier route) or after (which allows me to more precisely match edges and notches). Suggestions?

I always have done it after. I suppose you could do it before, as long as it didn't change the seam allowances you were using to sew your seam accurately.

For couture sewing you would thread trace the seam first and then you can finish the seam without loosing the seam allowance. Tedious but it does give lovely interior results.

you mean essentially basting along the seam line so you can see where it is? 2 more questions then - isn't it a pain to pick that tracing back out after you've sewn over (and often through) it? and how do you see the one on the bottom? Maybe just pin very carefully, checking all the while?

Second question about the hong kong finish too; what do you do with corners - like an underarm or pants crotch - do you miter it, or use 2 separate pieces of binding, or bind one side and find another finish for the other?
