1 member likes this. Date: 2/24/13 12:43 PM I found this lovely green DKNY wool skirt in a consignment shop. Way too small for me, alas, but it was on 1/2 price and might fit my daughter, so I bought it to study and pass along. Basic A-line skirt with intriguing darting and high slits at each seam. Only one side of back and front darted! Not for a super curvy figure, but I love the architectural shaping and the 11" slits. Hopefully I can post pix to explain.. ------ My Years of Sewing Fearlessly

Date: 2/24/13 1:03 PM Not sure if that photo linked properly. I kind of hate how PR integrates photos--reviews and classes are ok, but message board pix seem too mysterious for tech non-savvy folks like me. :-( ------ My Years of Sewing Fearlessly

Date: 2/24/13 7:34 PM I'm in Michigan and she's in Seattle, so she hasn't seen it yet. I'm curious, also, but for $18 I thought I could gamble on it (1/2 off at the consignment shop that day). I looked at it more carefully today and I suspect this is a pretty pricey skirt: it is completely self-lined, and the zipper is finished off with a silk insert at the bottom stop. I was just fascinated by the construction.
I'm taking it to my sewing teacher to have her help me draft it out and grade up from the size 2 to my more meaty size 8. My daughter is pretty tiny, and the fabric has a lot of give to it, so it might actually fit like a glove. It's kind of subversively sexy, perfect for a 26 yo. ------ My Years of Sewing Fearlessly

Date: 2/28/13 10:45 AM Are you sure about the orientation of the skirt? I wonder if it might be darted on the back, flat on the front, and the slits go on the sides? |

Date: 3/1/13 8:11 AM That's so funny you mentioned that! I took the skirt last night to my tailor friend, and she helped me draft a pattern for it off my skirt sloper. Yes, I had the orientation wrong: the full panels are front and back center pieces, and the sides are the darted pieces. Basically princess seaming. Two slits front, two slits back. Duh!
I'm relieved, because this should work as a skirt shape on me. The fabric is double-faced wool with a ton of hand-stitching at every edge and seam. I'm excited about the challenge of copying this on double-face wool, and I've already ordered a lovely piece of golden-brown Calvin Klein wool. My friend is going to help me through the process, and she suggested going full-out and hiding the invisible zipper inside the left center-back seam within the wool layers.
My daughter is not getting the green skirt until I'm well on my way with the rip-off. I have a feeling I'll need the inspiration there to keep me going! ------ My Years of Sewing Fearlessly
