This fabric is on sale for $3.95/yd. It is 97% cotton 3% lycra so clearly has stretch. But whatever I could find online said it is a shirting fabric. I can not tell from the squares if it is like a knit or a stretchy woven. Does anyone have any experience with this fabric? What did you make with it?

Thanks!

Poplin has always been to my knowledge, a woven fabric. So, this one will have some stretch, but still retains the qualities of a woven.
It may be crisp, not drapey. Think more structured stuff like shirts and fitted skirts. Then again, I have gotten some soft, drapey stretch wovens. It just depends on how much lycra it will have in it.
But, being poplin, I'm betting on it being a more crisp fabric.

Mary (SouthernStitch) is right about the fabric. Poplin is usually tightly woven and will not drape. Best used for fitted garments like shirts.

Here's a stretch poplin shirt from Old Navy. This is sort of what I think of as the classic/prototypical use for this fabric (ie, when I think of poplin, I think of something like this):

That was very helpful everyone. I do often wear shirts like that but don't feel like I am near to making one. Guess I will wait for next sale :-)

There are so many types of fabrics- who knew!?

You can make a t-shirt or a shell or a simple sheath dress out of the fabric. If you cut it right you won't even need to install a zipper.

Bump... if noone minds.

I have just seen the same fabric at www.fabric.com

Is the consensus that this would not be OK for culottes?

I was hoping it might be based on price

Some stretch poplins/cottons are wonderful, as seen in RTW A-line skirts or blazers--these would be heavier than blouse fabric and probably say "for skirt, jackets, etc." I re-purposed a heavily pleated one into an A-line for GD (don't have the content tag) and it comes out of the wash beautifully, just gathered waist with no zipper.

Check out fabrics like stretch denims in your local stores to see % contents first. Some RTW blouses like this have that too-much-poly, unbreathable weight for summer tho.

I like Fabric.com as an easier site and better, faster service, returns, and you can also find coupons online. If you ask a question in the box, they will tell you more about the fabric.

Your link didn't go directly to your fabric choice, but the description on the cotton poplins I saw were for blouses and dresses. Heavier weights are available that would be suitable for pants or culottes. Don't disregard the descriptions that are used. It's your best information on how you can use the fabric suitabley.
