What to do when a peplum meets a zip ?

My problem is what to do in the back wear the leather peplum is sewn in to the waist. I added it so I have no instructions and am stuck. I want the peplum to flare, and fear cutting it all the way down. I think the flare will just curl up in back, which I don't want. I also don't think I should sew the leather into the zipper seam, because it's a invisible zip which imho dose't like bulk. I think I could cut into the peplum part way down, and reinforce bottom of cut. This way the peplum is just sewn in at waist around , but not down zipper. However I fear that the cream dress will show through the open cut of the brown peplum. Help what other options are there? ------ if a little voice inside says dont buy that fabric you have so much, you know your not pushing the cart with the loud wheel to the cutting counter fast enough!

You are knocking this off so no directions? Do you have a photo to help? Anyway, just my thought get something that "looks" like brown leather (a butter suede or micro suede comes to mind) that would be easier to work the zip in? What do you think? ------ I have great enthusium for sewing, but lack talent to be great. 2013

Ms. Reese solved the problem by pleating the peplum just before the center back, so the peplum isn't sewn in the zip. I don't know if that would work for you, but it's one way to make a peplum flare without having it caught in the zip. Another idea I just had is to have the peplum have a separate closure, perhaps a placket? Or a simple overlap? And not have it attached at the seam where your zip is. That way, you could have it flaring out all the way around without interruption if that's your goal. ------ Fictionfan

I going to sew a scrap of the leather outside of the zipper on to the fabric, past the tape inside . It will stop any show through under the slit.
