I am trying to start with a very simple elastic waist skirt. My hip size according to the pattern is XS, and my waist is between small and medium. I found a Burda tutorial that tells you to mark a dot for the different size lines and then connect them with a french curve. But this results in a weird semi-circular bulge on the side of my pattern, sort of like a half moon sticking out at the top. Might it not be better to draw an angled straight line between the two points in this case?? Or should I draw the hip dot for the extra small lower down on the pattern so it is a more gradual curve?

Thanks much for any help, I've actually done a fair bit of sewing but this is my first attempt at following a pattern

I have to do the same thing, and I do end up with a weird looking pattern. But I carry all my weight in my stomach, so I add the inches to the front of the pattern.

I agree with solveg -- figure out where you need the extra inches at the waist and then add appropriately. If you have to add a significant amount and try to only do it at the side seams you will end up the seam not being smooth -- at least that's been my experience.
