Date: 3/4/13 4:46 PM Apparently Knitpicks has had a security issue. Maybe everyone is aware of it by now, but I thought I'd mention it just in case there are those who are not aware. I had recently placed an order, not realizing there had been a security problem. I use Paypal so there is no problem for me, but many customers were the victims of credit card fraud due to this issue. The information being passed around the internet indicates that the security breach occurred on Dec 21, was discovered on January 25 and Knitpicks began making the customers who's files were stolen aware of the issue on Feb 11. It appears there may be customers that have not yet been notified that have files that may have been compromised. ------ Viking D1, 1+, Pfaff 7570, Singer 503 Rocketeer, 66, 15-91, Featherweight 5 Flock, Babylock Enlighten & Coverstitch and Pfaff Creative Performance |

Date: 3/7/13 1:23 AM Knitpicks is in the Portland area and the breach was on the local news. What was interesting about the story, it appeared the employees alerted the news, because the higher ups were trying to keep it quiet. ------ My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since. |

Date: 3/8/13 11:09 PM I ordered a gift certificate from there for my daughter for Christmas. I was promptly charged twice. I called and they said that they were having problems like that and that they would make sure I was only charged once. I thought they were very easy to deal with. Their "known problem" should have been a clue.
Then in January someone charged my card for a purchase to Lush cosmetics for $1.25. Now, if you know Lush you know that there's nothing that can be bought for $1.25. I think it was a test. Then they used my card to purchase a rail pass in Germany!!
AmEx was on top of it and everything was taken care of but since they were specifically targeting on-line purchases when they called me I had wondered if it had something to do with Knitpicks since it was the only other thing I had used the card for.
I think that I'll unsubscribe from them now. I don't knit but it was nice to look at their offerings. But I don't want to deal with an on-line company that won't try to keep their systems secure or at least notify you up front when there's an issue. |

Date: 3/22/13 11:53 AM this topic had been extensively discussed over at Ravelry.com but just to summarize, according to KP people publicly, they supposedly contacted everyone (IN THE US only) whom they think were affected. I haven't shopped there in over a year, so I guess they thought it was okay for people who haven't shopped there recently. Last month, someone bought something on walmart.com for $99 with my DEBIT card. The money wasn't much but I don't shop at Walmart just on principle and I haven't been using my debit card recently. On Ravelry board, I found out that few people also got charged at Walmart.
So even if you're not a recent shopper, you could be affected. KP just did a poor job of damage control. so if you've shopped there EVER, keep an eye on your card activities, both credit and debit, including Paypal debit card (if you've only used Paypal, the actual account, they weren't affected, according to KP of course)
(BTW, we alerted both our bank and Walmart. Walmart wasn't very helpful, we got hung up while asking questions because the reps thought they answered all the questions they could answer and kept repeating that there's not more that they could do so they just hung up in the middle of the conversation. Bank just quickly swapped the card with a new one, and credited the money back to our acct). ------ ---------

Date: 3/22/13 11:55 AM If you've ever shopped over at Connectingthreads.com, KP and they are basically the same company (i think owned by the same company), and their websites are set up the same way. ------ ---------
