Date: 3/4/13 9:28 PM I found a great pair of rtw pants that fit really nicely everywhere except the front waist. They need just a smidge more room in the belly to prevent muffin top and for comfort. The next size up is comfortable in the front waist but huge everywhere else, even in the back waist. Is there an alteration that could fix this issue?
From the same company, I found some jeans that a tally have a high enough rise to cover my backside if I bend down (which I have to do all the time) and to hold in the muffin top up front. The smaller size is again too small in the waist and makes my thighs look like they've been squeezed into a sausage casing. The larger size fits in the waist but is too big in the front crotch and in the butt and generally looks like mom jeans. If I bought the larger size, could I have the other things altered?
I've gotten pretty good at dress fitting, but I don't do pants. I hope to learn one of these days, but I am in dire need of some pants to wear right away. So I can't make them myself. ------ Melanie |

If you can return them, buy them and take them to a professional alterations person. If they can't be fixed you can return them and not be out anything. If they can be fixed ask the alterations person what they will do, and then next time you can do them yourself. We are right next door to a higher end boutique, and they send their customers over to us directly from their dressing rooms, so we can see if we can improve the fit. Win-win, they can make a sale, and we get the alterations business. ------ Dawn T. |

It's been a stressful day, and when I heard her say (paraphrasing here) "there are only two reasons for needing this stretch; either you've been eating or you bought the wrong size" What my mind heard was "you're either fat or stupid". I know that's not right, and once I calmed down and watched the whole video, it is a quick simple way to deal with this for jeans that you will always want to cover up. I want to find a way that doesn't look so "hacked up". Off for a nice glass of iced tea! |

Date: 3/5/13 6:07 PM I have this same problem with any non-elastic waist pants. I purchased the "Altering RTW pants" class with Angela Wolf here on PR but have not been able to take the class yet. I know you need pants now and can't make them. I'm not suggesting that you take this class, but wanted to say that from my limited discussion with Angela, taking in too large RTW pants is definitely doable, so purchasing the larger size and taking them in for altering *should* work, depending on the alterations. Date: 3/5/13 11:21 PM Ah well, I've definitely been eating too much and that is certainly part of the problem! however, I think it's also normal that as you age, and after you have three large babies, that tummies are not as flat or firm as once they were. Patterns and rtw both assume a 10 inch difference between waist and hips, but mine is more like 8 these days and I think that's just fine. Except of course that nothing fits!
Thanks for the link. All ideas are helpful! ------ Melanie |

Maybe she thought she was joking and did not intend to be hurtful.
I already knew you could add a"V" of elastic and was thinking this to be a quick tutorial. |

1 member likes this. Date: 3/7/13 1:29 PM I just watched it and it seems like a student assignment doesn't it? She seems to feel the need to add a snappy talk show style banter to the topic. I suspect students had to do some multi media project for their communications class and this girl happens to sew so she used that topic. Anyway, obviously rtw doesn't fit everybody everywhere or I wouldn't be having this discussion.
Anyway, that technique seems a bit bubble gum and duct tape. If that's the fix, I might just go back to maternity pants. Saw a pregnant friend today and I really missed how easy it is to look cute in those months. No need to diet constantly, all those cute clothes in the shops. Most of all, no nasty waistbands digging in. Sigh. ------ Melanie |
