Do you use a straight stitch or zig-zag?

One more of those questions that has bugged me for a while: Are you supposed to stay stitch bias edges of a knit with a straight stitch or a slight zig-zag? I usually do the slight zig-zag within the SA, however I'm not sure that is the correct way.

Please feel free to chime it.

My patterns have always shown and told me to use a straight stitch when stay stitching, even on patterns that are only for stretch fabric. Since the whole point is to prevent stretching, I figure it makes sense to not want ANY stretch at those points. I've never had a problem when it once the piece is constructed either.

2014 resolution: keep track of sewn yardage!! I'm subtracting fabric given away from my yardage in. Yeah!
In: 93 yards
Sewn: 57 yards

I'll try anything once :)

Please excuse my typos...sometimes it is harder to go back and edit on mobile than it is worth!

I agree with HanPanda. I usually sew the same v-neck top, which always calls for straight stay-stitching up both sides of the v-point for several inches - otherwise the neckline can get stretched out of shape before it's finished. I try to keep my stay-stitching is just inside the seam allowance, so it doesn't show when I sew the final seam.

I've never actually stay stitched a knit - if I have something that needs to be 'stayed' I will fuse a little piece of tricot interfacing to the needed place. I've done that on shoulder seams and on v-necklines.
