Ok I'm a proud Grandma

My grandson (13) was here for 3 days of his Spring Break came and wanted to learn how to sew - Not only Sew, but Quilt!

Saturday morning he arrived so off to J's with coupons. Saturday afternoon we found an easy Twin Quilt pattern on the internet. I set up my Pfaff with the 1/4" foot on, and quickly taught him how to follow the toe of the foot and gave him scraps. (Already had bobbin wound, threaded etc.). While I cut the fabric up, he practiced. Sunday morning we pinned, Pressed and began his quilt. He sewed every other row and I sewed next to him on my Viking.

He's a natural with no fears or previous experience good or bad, and only needed to seam rip 1 block with the small sashing. I added the wide black sashing and 1st border strips and he's chosen the bright green for another border. Then the black with various colored musical notes perhaps.

in 3 days here's what we made he named
"Sounds Of Music"

Thank you! Ricky Tims I told him about that!! And a man was fabric shopping when we were in J's, so I pointed that out too! Men DO quilt.

Yeah we saw some of the light small strips don't quite match all the way down the quilt - but he said it was our design hmmm couldn't have said it better

Forgot to say we also stopped at the Shelter and talked to all the cats waiting for homes - DH said I'm making him a Crazy Cat man that quilts hehehe yep trying!

Design Feature --- He's got it And did a sewing machine make it's way home with him?

PortlandMaine is a brilliant quilter and frequently shares his work on PR. Here is his blog. Lots of inspiration for fearless quilting there.

Set him up on PR we would love to encourage him

That is so great! And that quilt looks nice. It wonderful to share this with our GC, isn't it? Making good memories.

I've been teaching my 9 yr old DGD to sew and quilt. Her (12 yr old) brother decided he wanted to try making a quilt too. He's actually doing very well for his 1st time.

Oh that's AWESOME Deb! His quilt is great and I LOVE his attitude!

It's so wonderful to start young, with no pre-conceived ideas about the way things 'should' be.

What a cool grandma you are!

And you should be proud -- your DGS did a great job on his first quilt. And it sounds like he's a natural.

I would love to share my love of sewing with one of my grandkids -- so far no lasting interest. Only 1 of the 7 is local so that might have something to do with it --- and the fact that 4 are infants/toddlers. The older ones do love to go to the fabric store and pick out fabric for Granny to sew them something though.

Love the music theme of the quilt -- actually inspired me as I have a number of musical prints in my stash that were purchased years ago for a project that never got off the ground. Just might have to dig those out and try to come up with a quilt top.

Has he started to hint at a second project yet?????

I'm impressed big time. This is something he is going to show off to his friends and be proud of it. I wonder how they will act when they see it.

If he and his friends live close to you, you will be opening a quilting school for summer break!
