Date: 3/13/13 3:26 AM I have been asked to make some sweatshirts for a large man. He's only 5'10 but has a very large protruding stomach.
He measures 54" at the chest and 62" around the belly. Hi stomach is quite low.
I measured his front and back and the front length is 8" longer than the back to go over the stomach. His bottom is very flat.
I"m thinking of buying a pattern for the chest size and altering the stomach.
Can anyone guide me to a thread on here where it was discussed....I'm sure I have seen one. Or if not can you let me know where to start?

Date: 3/13/13 6:47 AM On the Threads Magazine website you can join insider for a really reasonable fee, I think $14 a year. With that membership you get to watch all the video's Threads put out. Louis Cutting teaches these Insider video's. On Video four she goes into detail on how to enlarge or reduce body circumference without changing the neck, arm or shoulders. She shows other areas you can enlarge without making the whole garment much larger. I found those videos to be the best instructions I have ever received. I have bought some Craftsy classes but have not taken them, so can not compare to them. With the insider membership you also get to read the Thread magazine which costs more per year than the membership. There are also free patterns and many many other benefits. They have a free 14 day trial period and it would be a great way to check it out. |

Date: 3/13/13 8:38 AM Hi, thanks for the Threads info. I have just signed up for the free trial. I have watched the volume 4 video that you suggested and Louise Cutting is very clear with her instructions. I ended up watching 3 or 4 of her tutorials as they don't take long.
The only thing that bothers me with that alteration is that it makes both front and back bigger. Looking at the guy and how different he is in size between front and back, maybe I will have to consider the maternity alteration?

There are quite a few blogs, etc., that have good illustrations for maternity alterations. I know, because I'm now sewing for DDIL who is due in Sept. I "Googled" search terms like DIY maternity alterations, alter patterns for maternity, and such.
In addition, you can do a Search here at PR of the message boards. If you plug in "maternity" you'll find every thread, and can browse them. |

Off The Cuff Belly Alteration Method
To add larger amounts to the front for the belly, I would make a 1-pce pattern for the front and add at the sides and the centre front -- important to keep your grainline straight.
HTH -- it's been awhile since I've done this one but I used to have to do it for DH before he lost all his weight.

I have her Power Sewing book but haven't read it cover to cover. I have a brother who has a large tummy and really long arms. I have been making his shirts since he was in high school back in the 70's, but he has only put on this large amount of weight recently so I will be needing these methods soon also.

I found SB's alternation on the 'net. Then, I scoured both my Power Sewing books and neither has it.
The Off-The-Cuff alteration does not take into account the extra length needed in the front to keep the hem level. This needs to be done, just like a FBA for the bust. Maternity clothing adds to the CF length. JMHO

Date: 3/14/13 12:18 PM Maybe a combination of added space in the front only - combine the front adjustment in the Off-the-Cuff alteration for extra diameter with a crosswise slash and spread (like you were adding fabric to make a big dart across the stomach but using the extra fabric for expansion) to add to the length. You might also be able to to do something like a round back adjustment but across the front where fabric is added in the center but not all the way to the side. It depends on where the extra fabric is needed. |
