Hi, so I am making some bridesmaids dresses and decided to go with a Bemberg lining as its so smooth and anti static. Great idea until I start to work with it! Does anyone know how I find the grain accurately? I need to cut straight panels for a gathered skirt so need a straight grain so the hem stays level.

Second issue. I bought the fabric online at Vogue and when I got it in the mail it has loads of fold lines on it. I really don't want to wash the fabric as it seems to change the texture and the dresses will be dry clean only. I have tried ironing on cold setting but it doesn't get the crease out and seems to make the color darker where the iron has been. If I use steam the fabric goes all bobbly and changes texture, same goes for any water in general. Very tricky....

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Sarah

Question: is the fabric in your "second issue" the bemberg or is it the fashion (dress) fabric? If it is the latter, what kind of fabric is it?

For the first issue, the selvedge edges should be the straight grain lengthwise. To find the straight grain widthwise, cut a bit off the top and rip it across, the torn edge will be the straight grain. However, the hem will not be "level" just because you cut it on the straight grain, since the human body is not straight OR level.

I usually rip my Bemberg too...works great.
I iron it as well. You can use heat. Try a sample...once it cools it should be the same color.
Good luck with your dresses...please share when done. :)

I rip as well. You can use heat and steam on Bemberg.

I would steam the Bemberg in the dryer to pre-shrink and get rid of the wrinkles. Set your dryer on high, put the fabric in, and add a wet (not dripping, but not fully wrung-out) towel. Probably a hand towel in this case, as your fabric is lightweight. Run the dryer for about half an hour, and then whisk that fabric out straightaway.
